CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated team committed to providing representation and excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice & representation, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.

We are seeking a self-motivated candidate to join our team as a client support and Community Engagement Officer. This position is based in Alice Springs and includes travel assisting our outreach team to deliver services in remote communities across Central Australia. This position is Full - Time 18-month contract (may be ongoing subject to funding).

 CAWLS service delivery includes legal advice & representation, court support, client support, financial counselling, community education & outreach services.

CAWLS is an accredited community legal centre, a member of Women’s Legal Services Australia, and a specialist domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) service.

What you will do

The Client Support & Community engagement Officer has various roles and responsibilities including providing high quality, culturally safe and holistic client support assistance, including not limited to DFSV safety planning, legal health check assessments, systems navigation assistance, and social supports within CAWLS practice areas, with particular focus on clients experiencing or at risk of experiencing DFSV. 

In this role you will

  • Provide support services including assisting colleagues to ensure clients receive assistance in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
  • Assist the Integrated Community Justice Partnership Team Leader to facilitate the outreach program across designated Central Australian communities.
  • Manage the end-to-end logistics of CAWLS' remote outreach program, including travel bookings, accommodation, vehicle fleet coordination, schedules and operational support for remote community visits.
  • Assist with data collection, entry & control to meet the organisations needs for reporting under applicable grant agreements.
  • Work collaboratively with the CAWLS team for the overall success of the service, enabling, educating and empowering women to better engage in the legal system.
  • Support the administration team in front of house with general administration duties when required/tasked to do including answering the telephone, monitoring emails, greeting clients and completing intake forms & other tasks as directed.
  • Collect & enter required data for internal data collection systems.

ABOUT YOU 

We’re looking for a team member who:

  • Has an understanding of legal issues facing women in the Northern Territory, including barriers to justice, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
  • Has knowledge and connections to Central Australian remote communities
  • Is reliable, organised and detail-oriented
  • Is able to listen to and manage difficult conversations and the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive issues with discretion and integrity.
  • Is committed to promoting the interests of women
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment
  • Has a NT drivers licence, ochre card & current criminal history check (or the ability to get these)
  • Has or is willing to attend 4wd and First Aid training.
