The focus of this role is to provide trauma cultural therapeutic activities, programs and services to Aboriginal women and their children, who are impacted by or have experienced family violence.

Responsible for collaboratively supporting clients to attend to groups and counselling programs, you will be involved in the design and facilitation a range of culturally safe healing group programs with Aboriginal women, adolescents and children who are impacted by or have experienced or are users of family violence.

Collaborate and consult with internal and external stakeholders to reduce identified barriers and support clients to attend therapeutic groups and programs.

Deliver therapeutic group activities and supports to promote their healing and recovery from the effects of family violence.

Counselling and Intake

  • Identifying opportunities to support strong positive connection between participants and their families, culture, Country and Community to promote healing and recovery;
  • Engaging with clients through in-service and outreach appointments as appropriate;
  • Collaborating and consulting with internal and external stakeholders to reduce identified barriers and support to clients to attend therapeutic groups and programs;
  • Maintaining records; including notes, reports, plans and data within required timelines;
  • Ensuring that client records are in accordance with YWAHS quality/audit requirements;
  • Identify family violence risks and strategies to support safety and the healing journey;
  • Utilising an Aboriginal frameworks provide cultural support and safety for clients accessing services and support, specifically those relevant to the needs of Aboriginal people;
  • Using a ‘Trauma Informed Approach’ use your understandings of trauma to help validate a victim’s experience of trauma and its impacts and by using a range of therapeutic responses to make families safe and support them to re-establish their lives.
    • Identify appropriate referral pathways and services to facilitate access for clients, where appropriate.
    • You will contribute toward the improvement of YWAHS service delivery as part of an integrated model (i.e. wrap around services for clients and their families) and contribute to education and prevention activities that support and promote safety, health and well-being.
