Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) is a proud Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the Ovens Murray region.
We are seeking a passionate and motivated Koori Maternity Support Worker to join our Early Years team. In this role, you will work alongside Aboriginal women, babies and families, providing culturally safe, holistic support during pregnancy and the postnatal period to improve health, wellbeing and connection to community.
About the Role
This is a dynamic, community focused position delivering culturally responsive maternity and early years support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
As the Koori Maternity Support Worker, you will work within a strengths-based, culturally led framework to improve access to maternity and maternal child health services, supporting families to achieve healthy, positive outcomes.
You will
- Provide culturally safe, flexible support to Aboriginal women during pregnancy and the postnatal period
- Engage early with women and families to support improved access to maternity and child health services
- Build strong, trusting relationships with women, families, Elders, hospitals and key stakeholders
- Facilitate referrals and coordinate services to ensure holistic, wraparound support
- Support postnatal care including breastfeeding, parenting guidance, nutrition and healthy lifestyle education
- Deliver and support health promotion activities across areas such as women’s health, nutrition, smoking cessation and wellbeing
- Assist women and families to attend appointments, including outreach and transport support where required
- Work collaboratively with hospitals and community services to ensure integrated, seamless care
- Promote the program through community engagement, events and strong relationships with local leaders and Elders
- Maintain accurate, timely and confidential client records, reporting and data entry in line with requirements
About You
You are a passionate community practitioner committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal women, babies and families. You bring a culturally respectful, strengths-based approach and thrive in community focused work.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with Aboriginal women, families, Elders and stakeholders
- Strong understanding of culturally safe practice and commitment to Aboriginal self determination
- Knowledge of health and wellbeing needs for Aboriginal women and children
- Experience in community engagement, health promotion or family support
- Confident in coordinating services, referrals and supporting client pathways
- Excellent communication, organisation and problem solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Strong understanding of Aboriginal culture and culturally safe practice
- Experience in community services, maternal health, early years or related field
- Ability to build trusting relationships with families and stakeholders
- Strong communication, advocacy and organisational skills
- Commitment to Aboriginal self determination and family-centred practice
Desirable
- Certificate III in Aboriginal Health, Community Services or similar
- Experience in maternal health, child health or health promotion programs
Mandatory Requirements
- Current Driver’s Licence
- Working with Children Check (VIC)
- National Police Check
- Pre-employment Health Declaration
