About Us:

Justice Support Centre is a not-for-profit community legal centre committed to delivering legal services that promote access to justice for disadvantaged individuals in South West Sydney and Central Sydney. Specialising in domestic and family violence (DFV) support, we provide comprehensive assistance, information, court support, and casework to victims-survivors of DFV. Governed by a volunteer board, our dedicated team works collaboratively to address the unique challenges faced by our clients.

About the Role:

Your role within JSC is crucial in providing specialised financial counselling support to women who have been impacted by domestic and family violence. Your responsibilities will include case planning, information dissemination, practical assistance, community education, advocacy, and networking to empower and support our clients.

Key Responsibilities:

Casework:

  • Assess and address clients' overall financial situations, considering potential legal implications.
  • Develop individual case plans in collaboration with clients, offering strategies to meet their needs and goals.
  • Empower clients to understand their consumer rights, build financial resilience, and safeguard against financial abuse.
  • Conduct negotiation and advocacy with financial institutions, utility providers, and creditors on behalf of clients.
  • Provide ongoing assessments from initial intake to exit, ensuring comprehensive support.

Accountability and Administration:

  • Maintain accurate client records, data, and statistics in compliance with organisational policies and funding requirements.
  • Contribute to reports for the funding body and participate in planning, implementation, and review of DFV financial counselling services.
  • Attend relevant training and external supervision to stay accredited and informed about industry developments.

Community Education:

  • Collaborate with other Justice Support Centre workers to plan and present community education on financial wellbeing and security.
  • Utilise various strategies, including digital platforms, to reach the general public and enhance community education resources.

Community Development:

  • Build capacity within the financial counselling sector to support DFV survivors.
  • Participate in local projects and networks to strengthen links with relevant community services.

Policy and Law Reform:

  • Engage in relevant networks and law reform committees, contributing to policy documents and submissions.

Essential Criteria:

  • Diploma of Financial Counselling or Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling).
  • Accredited member of the Financial Counselling Association of NSW or eligible for accredited membership.
  • Minimum three years' full-time experience in providing financial counselling to diverse community members.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of financial counselling interventions, credit, debt, and social security legislation.
  • Understanding of the effects of DFV trauma.
  • Ability to work flexibly, collaboratively, and independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good computer literacy.
  • Current driver’s license and comprehensively insured vehicle.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Fluency in a community language other than English.
  • Knowledge of South West Sydney and Central Sydney areas and their community services networks.
  • Evidence of advocacy or consumer education initiatives.
