Refuge Victoria is a not-for-profit Specialist Family Violence Organisation that provides refuge/crisis accommodation and support to women and children as they begin their journeys to a safer and happier future. We have been responding to family violence and changing people’s stories for over 40 years. Refuge Victoria is the largest provider of refuge/crisis accommodation in Victoria with three core and cluster refuges, 15 refuge properties and nomination rights to 35 Transitional Houses. We support women and children experiencing homelessness from family violence, providing refuge and crisis accommodation, risk assessment and case management support and outreach case management support to clients in transitional properties and/or private rental.

THE ROLE

Family Violence has a profound impact on the health outcomes victim survivors. As a vital member of our service delivery team, the Nurse (Community Health Promotion) will play a crucial role in implementing and expanding the health and wellness program for our clients at Refuge Victoria. Your expertise will contribute to breaking down barriers and encouraging individuals to lead healthier lives beyond using our services. The program is designed to empower clients with the essential tools and information needed to lead fulfilling and free lives post-service. The Nurse Educator will focus on facilitating access to appropriate healthcare for individuals and their families, emphasising health priorities and education to promote long-term well-being for our clients and their families.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Note: This role is an educational position, and it is not a clinical role. Its main purpose is to inform and empower clients to appropriately manage the health of themselves and their families and to support them in their healthcare appointments and decisions whilst in refuge.

  • Assess and identify the health needs and heath goals of clients and their children and then work together to address these needs.
  • Develop a comprehensive model encompassing health screening, support, advocacy, and education.
  • Facilitate access to appropriate local healthcare services for individuals and their families.
  • Provide health education to enhance awareness and empower individuals to actively manage their well-being and health concerns.
  • Teach clients to prioritise health needs and ensure they are equipped with the knowledge to be able to make informed decisions.
  • Support clients in making healthcare appointments and attending these appointments where necessary.
  • Working closely with support workers and case managers to incorporate healthcare into client case plans.

  • Passionate about promoting health and wellness and educating others on how to prioritise personal health and the health of families.
  • Committed to advocating for the health and wellbeing of individuals who have experienced trauma.
  • As a registered nurse with relevant certifications, you bring a solid foundation of healthcare knowledge and experience. Your expertise extends beyond clinical practice, encompassing healthcare education and advocacy.
  • You can build trust and rapport with your clients, creating a supportive environment that encourages open communication and collaboration.
  • You navigate challenges with resilience and compassion, always keeping the well-being of your clients at the forefront.
  • You thrive in a team environment and work well with others, but you have the confidence and ability to work autonomously when necessary.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL NEED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Current nursing registration with all relevant nursing and healthcare qualifications
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience within healthcare
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build trust and rapport
  • Understanding of the unique healthcare challenges faced by victim survivors
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise competing demands

The successful applicant will need to undertake a national police check, referee checks, be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and have a Working with Children Check.
