Finding Safety Project, a program of Jesuit Refugee Service Australia, provides holistic support, case management, and community connection activities to women on temporary visas experiencing gender-based violence, housing instability, and social isolation.

We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Support Worker to join our team for a 12-month contract. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about social justice and committed to supporting women from diverse cultural and migration backgrounds to access safety, housing, and essential services.

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. In Australia, JRS works alongside people seeking asylum to support dignity, inclusion and meaningful participation in the community through holistic and trauma-informed services.

About the Role

As the Support Worker, you will provide practical, client-centred support to women engaged with the Finding Safety Project. A key focus of the role is assisting women to access safe accommodation.

You will work closely with case workers, community organisations, housing providers, and specialist services to ensure women receive trauma-informed support.

Key Responsibilities

Accommodation Support

  • Assist women to access crisis, temporary, transitional, and long-term accommodation options.
  • Support housing applications, referrals, and communication with accommodation providers.
  • Advocate for women facing barriers to securing or maintaining housing.
  • Assist with practical arrangements related to moving into accommodation.
  • Maintain knowledge of local housing pathways and support services.

Client Support

  • Provide emotional support to women experiencing complex challenges including homelessness.
  • Assist with service navigation and accessing community resources.
  • Work alongside case workers to implement client action plans.

Crisis and Safety Support

  • Respond appropriately to women experiencing homelessness.
  • Contribute to safety planning and risk management processes.
  • Provide trauma-informed and culturally responsive support.
  • Escalate high-risk concerns in accordance with organisational procedures.

Women's Space Support

  • Help maintain a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment.
  • Support activities, resource distribution, and client engagement.
  • Build trusting relationships with women from diverse cultural, linguistic, and faith backgrounds.

Administration and Collaboration

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
  • Complete required documentation and reporting.
  • Participate in team meetings, supervision, training, and reflective practice.
  • Build positive relationships with community partners and service providers.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working with women experiencing family violence, homelessness, housing insecurity, or other complex needs.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed, strengths-based, and client-centred practice.
  • Experience supporting clients to access accommodation and community services.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with women from diverse cultural, linguistic, and faith backgrounds.
  • Have administration and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Current Working with Children Check.
  • Current National Police Check.

Desirable

  • Qualifications or current studies in Community Services, Social Work, Welfare, Case Management, or a related field.
  • Experience within women's services, community centres, or family violence programs.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.
