The Hobart Women’s Shelter (HWS) is a not-for-profit organisation that has been providing crisis and transitional accommodation to women and children experiencing homelessness and/or family violence for more than 50 years.

Our mission is to champion the safety, wellbeing and development of women, their families, and the wider community through the provision of emergency accommodation, housing, education, and advocacy.

Our vision is to create a safe and inclusive community free from homelessness, violence, inequality, and injustice. Our work is underpinned by the values of equality, safety, collaboration, integrity, innovation, and diversity.

Board Chair

We are seeking an experienced and values-driven leader to take on the role of Board Chair.

The Chair provides strategic leadership to the Board, ensuring strong governance, effective decision-making, and alignment with the organisation’s purpose and strategic direction.

Working closely with the CEO, the Chair supports the development, oversight and delivery of HWS’s strategic priorities, including growth, partnerships and service impact.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Board to set and monitor the organisation’s strategic direction
  • Supporting and overseeing the CEO in the delivery of strategic and operational goals
  • Facilitating Board meetings and guiding informed, forward-focused decision-making
  • Strengthening partnerships and stakeholder engagement to advance strategic outcomes
  • Ensuring governance, risk management and compliance frameworks support sustainable growth
