ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is responsible for leading our corporate services functions, ensuring FLS has strong financial management, people and culture business operations and risk management practices in place. Working in close collaboration with the CEO and others on the Senior Leadership Team, the Director – Operations plays a key role in implementing strategic priorities and keeping the organisation running smoothly so that front-line functions can deliver for the communities we serve.
This is a hands-on leadership role, moving between strategic and operational levels, and directing and doing work across a broad range of functions.
You will make a difference by:
- Bringing an operational lens to strategy planning, and developing and maintaining systems, processes and relationships that ensure priorities are effectively implemented.
- Building and maintaining organisational systems to meet governance, risk and compliance obligations, including supporting the Board’s activities.
- Overseeing financial management, ensuring effective budgeting, reporting, and facilitating strategic financial advice to the CEO to drive sustainability and accountability.
- Overseeing business operations, including facilities, digital and IT, procurement and contract management, insurance, and more.
- Overseeing people and culture, including activities that facilitate a positive, inclusive and safe experience for employees and volunteers, as well as meeting compliance obligations.
- Leading and delivering operational and systems improvement projects.
- Leading and managing an inter-disciplinary team that provides operational support to the organisation.

Fitzroy Legal Service (FLS) is dedicated to assisting the most marginalised members of the community with legal information, advice and representation, as well as championing law reform and conducting public interest litigation.
Fitzroy Legal Service provides legal services for communities who are disproportionately impacted by law and policy, and those who face systemic barriers to accessing justice. We provide various multidisciplinary outreach programs reaching communities of colour, people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, LGBTIQA+ communities and people who use drugs.

ABOUT YOU
To be successful in the role you will ideally have:
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism and the vision, purpose and values of Fitzroy Legal Service
- Significant experience in a senior operations role, with responsibility for organisational support functions and managing a multi-disciplinary team of staff
- A tertiary qualification in Business Administration, Management, Finance or other relevant discipline
- A demonstrated ability to design and improve organisational systems, processes and workflows to increase effectiveness and efficiency and manage change
- A demonstrated ability to manage organisational risk, compliance frameworks and governance processes
- Strong financial literacy, including budgeting, forecasting, financial controls and reporting
- A demonstrated ability to lead a people and culture function, including managing employee relations issues, ensuring staff safety and building positive workplace culture
- Strong organisational skills, with demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, follow through on commitments and communicate progress
- Strong project management skills, including setting objectives and planning and executing workstreams
- Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with an ability to work through conflict, and give and receive feedback
- Strong understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, and an ability to foster a culturally and psychologically safe workplace
