Are you passionate and motivated about human rights? Do you want to use your knowledge of human rights issues to assist a leading advocacy organisation to promote and defend human rights in Tibet?

  • Permanent part-time role. Our preference is for a Sydney-based person but we will consider Melbourne or Canberra locations for the right candidate.

This opportunity to join Australia Tibet Council’s team comes at an exciting time when human rights are the subject of renewed focus. ATC campaigns to ensure the protection of the human rights and democratic freedoms of the Tibetan people. We are looking for an experienced Executive Officer (EO) to manage the organisation and to report to ATC’s Board of Directors (Board).

The EO works in a complex environment requiring effective collaboration and interaction with ATC’s Board, staff, members, donors and volunteers; the Tibetan community; partner organisations, government representatives, the media. In particular, the EO is expected to work closely with the part-time Campaigns Officer (CO). ATC will take a flexible approach to the ways in which the EO and CO agree to structure and implement their work.

The EO is responsible for:

  • Providing effective leadership and management of the organisation,
  • Shaping and executing the organisational strategy,
  • Effective management of financial, physical and human resources,
  • Building and maintaining strategic partnerships with stakeholders, including government, the Tibetan community, and partner organisations to progress ATC’s objectives,
  • Developing and implementing media strategy, including presenting ATC’s case to the media,
  • Driving a positive organisational and workplace culture,
  • Supervising staff, including campaigners, and
  • Strengthening and growing the organization, in collaboration with ATC’s Board, staff, members and volunteers.

Professional qualifications and experience

The EO will have:

  • Degree qualifications in a relevant field with at least 5 years’ experience in a similar role,
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, and an ability to effectively communicate ATC’s values and objectives to stakeholders including members, government and media,
  • Campaigning experience,
  • Demonstrated experience working with a Board of Directors,
  • A high level of political astuteness, with a very good understanding of the political landscape in which ATC operates, and
  • A driver’s licence.

Selection Criteria

Strategic Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement

  1. Highly developed organizational skills and effectiveness in strategic planning and media strategy.
  2. Experience establishing and managing strategic partnerships and in working with diverse stakeholders, including community groups.

Advocacy

  1. Good understanding of human rights, the Tibet issue and the Australia-China relationship in an evolving geopolitical situation.
  2. High-level communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write for a wide range of audiences, and to speak to the media and in public.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of Australian parliamentary processes, government relations, and advocacy strategies.

Organisational Management and Governance

  1. Experience in overseeing the effective management of finances and in working to ensure an organisation’s financial stability.
  2. Experience in developing fundraising and supporter engagement strategies.
  3. Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with a Board of Directors and staff.

ATC operates as a “virtual” organisation. Staff and Board members work from home and are in constant contact using Google tools and video conferencing tools. Face-to-face meetings are held when necessary.

You will be rewarded with generous and flexible working conditions, a fantastic environment working with committed and dedicated individuals, and an opportunity to directly contribute to ATC’s long-term sustainability. ATC is offering a salary of $70,000 to $75,000 full time equivalent. The exact amount will reflect your hours worked, experience and qualifications. The EO is expected to travel to Canberra and perhaps other locations. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. From time to time, weekend work may be required and will be recompensed time-in-lieu.

The successful candidate is expected to help plan ATC’s work for 2021 and attend the Board’s strategy workshop on 5-6 December 2020. If face-to-face, the workshop will be in Sydney. If required by Covid-19 restrictions, the workshop will be held electronically.
