About the role:
The Victorian Branch of the AMWU is seeking to appoint The Migrant and Multicultural Officer, who will play a critical role in promoting our trades, working in the manufacturing industry and supporting and advocating for migrant and multicultural workers within the coverage of the AMWU. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to engage, empower, and represent culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) members, ensuring their rights and interests are effectively addressed within the union.
Key Responsibilities included but not limited to:
- Engage with migrant and multicultural members to understand their workplace challenges and needs.
- Develop and deliver targeted campaigns, education programs, and resources that address issues specific to migrant and multicultural workers.
- Provide culturally sensitive support and advocacy to members facing workplace disputes, discrimination, or unfair treatment and help with Visa issues.
- Collaborate with union officials, community organisations, and external stakeholders to strengthen support networks for CALD workers.
- Promote careers within the union’s coverage and the benefits of union membership and participation among migrant and multicultural communities.
- Monitor and report on issues affecting migrant and multicultural workers, advising union leadership on policy and strategy development.
- Facilitate training sessions and workshops to raise awareness about workers’ rights, health and safety, and anti-discrimination laws within multicultural workplaces.
- Support collective bargaining processes by ensuring the inclusion of migrant and multicultural worker concerns.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Demonstrated understanding of migrant and multicultural workforce issues in the manufacturing or broader industrial sectors.
- Experience in community engagement, advocacy, or union work, specifically with CALD groups.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively across diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to develop and deliver educational programs and campaigns.
- Knowledge of industrial relations, workplace laws, and anti-discrimination legislation.
- Commitment to unionism, social justice, equity, and inclusion principles.
- Ability in one or more community languages is desirable.
Reporting:
Reports to the Victorian Branch leadership group within AMWU Victoria.
Employment Conditions:
Employment conditions will align with union policies and applicable industrial agreements.
