Andrew Braddock MLA, Jo Clay MLA, Laura Nuttall MLA and Rebecca Vassarotti MLA are seeking a Chief of Staff to work on behalf of the ACT Greens in the ACT Legislative Assembly. The ACT Greens Chief of Staff role includes strategic advice on and coordination of all four MLAs, including the Leader’s portfolio and includes political responsibilities.  

Duties 

  • Strategic team coordination to ensure portfolio, political and constituency and Assembly sitting responsibilities are met. This includes policy and political planning, Assembly business planning and coordination, constituent and stakeholder liaison coordination. 
  • Key liaison with all other political parties in the Assembly, alongside building effective relationships with the ACT Greens Party Director, Convenors and on occasion other office bearers. 
  • Strategic communications and engagement to ensure Greens MLAs are forming the right relationships and delivering impact on behalf of the community. 
  • Anticipate, identify and analyse major issues and prepare appropriate responses or strategies for the MLAs.
  • Undertake high-level liaison on the Leader’s behalf with other MLAs and their offices, Assembly staff, party representatives and community, media and industry stakeholders. 
  • Provide timely advice to the Leader and other MLAs on sensitive and complex issues. 
  • In consultation with MLAs, provide structures to allow effective coordination of cross-office, policy development, and communications processes. 
  • Develop briefings and other papers on relevant policy and political matters as required. 
  • Advise MLAs on budget and resource allocations with and across MLAs’ offices, through effective partnership with the ACT Legislative Assembly. 
  • Organisational culture – work effectively with the Executive Officer and Office of the Legislative Assembly to assist MLAs to build and sustain a positive team culture. 
  • Apply a demonstrated commitment, or willingness, to implement ACT Greens principles and policies around ecological sustainability, social justice, peace and non-violence and grassroots participatory democracy.
  • Other duties as directed. 

Selection criteria

  • Strong team and organisational development experience. 
  • Strong background in communications: political or government preferred.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Emotional awareness and an ability to work as a trusted adviser to deliver effectively for diverse stakeholders. 
  • Capacity to work independently, meet deadlines and work under pressure, and enable others to deliver effectively against objectives. 
  • Experience with whole of government or economic policy analysis.
  • Experience or affinity with parliamentary systems, the ACT political system or the public service.

The role will be for the term of the 11th Assembly and is set at Senior Adviser Level 1-2 depending on experience, plus superannuation and the LAMS allowance.

The successful candidate will be engaged under a Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff contract, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the ACT Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff Enterprise Agreement 2023-2026.  It is not an ACT Public Service position.
