About the organisation

The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) is built on the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. NCIE's programs and services are designed with the sole purpose of creating long-term improvements in health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NCIE is an inclusive dynamic hub, where staff are hands on, collaborative, engaging and passionate about working with the community.

About the role

The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) is a not-for-profit social enterprise, that seeks a community focused and highly organised CEO to join their team on a 12-month contract.

The Chief Executive Officer will not only provide strategic and operational oversight of Fitness & Aquatic facilities, but also ensure that NCIE is a space for the community to be safe, that encourages and accommodates self-determination and community governance.

The successful candidate will need to have exceptional, consistent, and appropriate communication skills with various stakeholders. In addition to this, be able to navigate landscapes strategically and provide mentorship and leadership to the staff and community. Strong financial acumen will be a vital component, to ensure the success and long-term success of NCIE for employees and community.

The position reports to the Board of Directors and has 6 direct reports.

About you

NCIE is an important meeting place for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community across Redfern, and greater Sydney. Therefor it is important that the successful candidate can establish trust, create successful relationships, and walk between both an operational CEO world, and a community facing world. This includes having a well-developed knowledge of the not-for-profit/social enterprise sector, including opportunities and challenges faced by the sector.

You will have an innate desire to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and can deliver the desirable strategic, operational and leadership outcomes with excellence, inclusiveness, kindness, and integrity whilst encouraging growth.

Selection Criteria

  1. Sound commercial knowledge and understanding of business success principles and/or relevant qualifications such as Business, Finance, Community Development.
  2. Demonstrated capacity to lead, improve efficiencies and deliver business development outcomes. This may include leading an organisation through significant change whilst embodying confidentiality and sound judgement regarding sensitive information.
  3. Demonstrated experience building strategic partnerships, including considerable influencing, and negotiating skills to successfully advocate and achieve positive results.
  4. Well-developed financial acumen and business skills, including preparing and managing budgets and identifying acceptable costs and outcomes to create and implement business plans.
  5. High level of autonomy and proven ability to investigate issues, identify and analyse problems, and develop and implement practical solutions that mitigate risk.
  6. Strong understanding and awareness of the history, culture and issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and have experience in being a strong, confident voice to ensure cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity is embedded in your organisation.
