ABOUT THE ROLE

Kriol is the main language spoken in Ngukurr and by thousands of people across Northern Australia. Despite this, Kriol is critically under-resourced and under-represented in education, media, arts, and other domains where English retains cultural, linguistic, and social dominance.

In 2019, and in response to these factors, Yugul Mangi Development Aboriginal Corporation (YMDAC) commenced funding the Meigim Kriol Strongbala Program (the Program) with the aim of developing Kriol learning opportunities for individuals, families, employees, and groups using appropriately designed and delivered teaching and learning resources. 

The Program’s primary objectives are to provide Kriol speakers in Ngukurr and beyond opportunities to both:

  • enhance the broader profile of Kriol; and 
  • foster local and regional pride in Kriol to enhance speakers’ cultural, family, and social environments.

The main responsibilities are:

To enable staff to achieve the dual focus above by focusing on a range of diverse strategies including:

  • Facilitating school-based or adult education programs.
  • Delivering projects to create Kriol resources including books and other tools.
  • Delivering translation projects.
  • Delivering diverse media projects to create new and innovative Kriol-medium digital media; and 
  • Other projects defined by the Strongbala Pipul Wanbala Bois Komiti (which governs all YMDAC’s social programs) on behalf of Ngukurr community. 
  • Develop, organise, and collate existing school-based Kriol education resources (for example, worksheets, curriculum units and other resources) including ensuring:
    • consistent file labelling.
    • basic metadata integrity including in relation to age/year, education level, curriculum links and resource type, etc.; and
    • the addition of teachers’ notes/instructions where possible.
  • In partnership with a designated web designer, establish and create a coordinated system of hosting online resources.

A MUST HAVE:

  • Tertiary qualifications in linguistics and/or education.
  • Understanding of the principles and practices of effective and sustainable community development in Aboriginal contexts.
  • Ability to manage community-based projects and programs from development, inception and delivery to meaningful evaluation. 
  • Experience working in Ngukurr and/or with Kriol speakers and/or with Aboriginal language speakers.
  • High level of computer literacy.
  • Fluency in and/or knowledge of Kriol.
  • Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card). 
  • National Police Criminal History Report (less than three months old).
