Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the Ovens Murray region. Our work is guided by principles of self‑determination, cultural respect, community leadership and improved wellbeing for Aboriginal families and communities.

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated and culturally responsive Aboriginal Family Violence Officer to join our Specialist Support Team. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families experiencing or at risk of family and domestic violence.

About the Role

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Aboriginal Family Violence Officer provides culturally safe, trauma-informed support to individuals and families affected by family violence. The role delivers case management, risk assessment, safety planning, and referral support, while working collaboratively with internal programs and external stakeholders to improve safety and wellbeing outcomes.

Working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled framework, you will support clients to access appropriate services, housing pathways, community supports and advocacy, helping families achieve greater safety, stability and independence.

Key Responsibilities

As an Aboriginal Family Violence Officer, you will:

  • Deliver culturally safe, trauma-informed family violence support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families.
  • Conduct family violence risk assessments, safety planning and crisis response interventions in accordance with best-practice frameworks, including MARAM.
  • Provide strengths-based case management and ongoing support to clients experiencing complex family violence issues.
  • Support clients to access housing pathways, specialist services, health supports, legal services and community resources.
  • Build strong, respectful and culturally safe relationships with clients, families, community members and key stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, Family Violence Services, Victoria Police, Child Protection and other partner agencies to deliver coordinated support responses.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, client records, reports and documentation in accordance with legislative, funding and organisational requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, quality assurance activities and program development initiatives.
  • Participate in supervision, professional development and reflective practice to maintain professional capability and service excellence.
  • Promote Aboriginal self-determination, cultural safety and community-led approaches in all aspects of service delivery.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Relevant degree, diploma or qualification in Community Services, Social Work, Welfare, Human Services or a related field, or significant demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Experience working with individuals and families impacted by family violence.
  • Knowledge and understanding of MARAM, family violence risk assessment and safety planning practices.
  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal culture, cultural safety and community-controlled service delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities.
  • Strong case management, assessment and client advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, complex caseloads and time-sensitive matters.
  • Highly developed communication, relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong organisational skills, including accurate record keeping and reporting.

Desirable:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • Experience working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO).
  • Experience delivering family violence case management and crisis response services.
  • Experience working with housing pathways and brokerage support.
  • Knowledge of the family violence service system, courts and referral pathways.
  • Experience conducting outreach work in homes and community settings.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice and therapeutic frameworks.
