Hope for Health (HFH) is an exciting community driven program based in North East Arnhem Land, where the traditional diet of the Yolngu people and frameworks are being used powerfully to tackle chronic disease and empower health.

The Program provides dietary and educational intervention that commences with a health retreat “on country”, followed by a Indigenous health coaching program to support community members on their journey to positive lifestyle change.

We are seeking Individuals or couples with a calling to work with Indigenous people. The position is an opportunity to play a leading role in transforming the health of the community. The program has already achieved high retention and success rates, and in 2022, we have an opportunity to deliver the program at a larger scale and partner with a large research project, seeking to find preventative health solutions.

The Health Coach Mentor will work with Yolngu local Health Coaches, to support Hope For Health participants and their families, with navigating personal and systemic challenges and ultimately making better lifestyle choices.

Position is available for 10 months from February/March 2022 to 31 December 2022. Salary is $58,000 per annum, pro rata, with salary sacrifice options, plus flights, and accommodation if required, plus 4 weeks leave. Extension of the role into 2023 will be dependent on the availability of funding.

We are also looking for a Health Coach and Case Manager who will be working closely with the successful candidate in this role.

Relevant Qualifications:

Qualifications in any of the following fields are considered advantageous:

  • Diet/Nutrition, Naturopathy, Health Coaching, Nursing, Medicine, Aboriginal Health work, Social Work, Community Development
  • First Aid certificate or current CPR for medically trained staff (or demonstrate plan to complete training)
  • Drivers license - manual vehicle

Required Experience In:

  • Supporting individuals or groups to adopt positive lifestyle change
  • The use of nutrition for healing
  • Using a nutrition approach consistent with the Yolngu traditional diet (ie. whole food, low carb framework)

Desirable Experience in:

  • Community development and working cross-culturally
  • Case management working with people who have severe chronic illness

Skills and Aptitude:

  • Calling or passion for positively impacting the lives of local Aboriginal people (the Yolngu people)
  • Familiar with whole food, low carbohydrate and high nutrient dietary approaches
  • Can take blood pressure, and BSL measurements (those with additional qualification to take bloods are an advantage to the program)
  • Good interdisciplinary rapport (ie. works with medical and natural therapy practitioners)
  • Good computer literacy, use of wifi, word-processing, spreadsheets, and client management software
  • Comfortable with prayer in meetings. Our Steering Committee, some staff and members are Christians as are many Yolngu people. Prayer is sometimes held in meetings and community events.
  • Respectful toward Yolngu traditional culture and laws.
