About the Role

The role of the Needle and Syringe Program/ Community Development Worker is to deliver effective, friendly and efficient services to clients by:

  • Providing safer using and safer sex products
  • Providing engagement and support, including advocacy and liaison
  • Providing information and referral to appropriate services both within cohealth and externally
  • Supporting NSP services as required at sites across cohealth

Your daily duties will be diverse however, will include:

  • Providing needles/syringes and other injecting equipment to clients to support safer using
  • Promoting safe needle/syringe disposal
  • Assist in the operation of the Needle & Syringe Program across cohealth sites including syringe management and outreach work
  • Support and assist clients to understand and navigate health and other community services within cohealth and externally
  • Maximise opportunities to provide information and education on safer drug use, BBV and STI treatment and prevention

About You

Our ideal candidate for this candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. AOD, Community Development, Social Work), Certificate IV or higher with minimum two years relevant work experience. Lived experience will be highly regarded
  • Sound knowledge of the health and social issues for people who use drugs such as blood-borne virus prevention, pharmacotherapy treatment, stigma and discrimination
  • The ability to assess client need in order to support and assist their navigation of health and other community services within cohealth and externally
  • A commitment to the principles of harm reduction
  • The ability to establish respectful professional relationships that have clear boundaries with consumers, staff and partner organisations
  • The ability to engage with service users in a warm, non-judgemental manner, demonstrate a strong customer service focussed approach and where appropriate engage the client in harm reduction brief interventions, education and/or information and referral
