About VALS

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and the state's only dedicated legal and support service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Established in 1973, VALS provides culturally safe legal advice and representation across criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice, and specialist litigation. We also deliver a range of support programs including family violence services, transitional housing, community legal education, and our 24/7 Custody Notification Service.

About the Role

You will provide administrative and coordination support across all areas of Human Resources.

This is a varied role where no two days are the same. You'll be involved in recruitment activities, onboarding new employees, maintaining employee records, coordinating training, supporting compliance requirements, assisting with HR reporting, and contributing to employee engagement initiatives.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys organisation, administration, working with people, and building a career in Human Resources.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Prepare employment contracts, offer letters, and onboarding documentation
  • Coordinate new starter onboarding and induction activities
  • Support recruitment administration and candidate communications

Employee Administration

  • Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation
  • Process employment changes including contract variations and employee movements
  • Monitor probation reviews, contract end dates, and employment milestones
  • Respond to routine employee and manager enquiries

HR Systems & Reporting

  • Maintain employee information within HR systems
  • Generate workforce reports and HR data
  • Support data integrity and process improvement initiatives

Learning & Development

  • Coordinate training bookings and attendance records
  • Monitor completion of mandatory training requirements
  • Support performance and development review processes

Compliance & Governance

  • Coordinate employment screening and compliance checks
  • Maintain HR policies, templates, and documentation
  • Support audit and compliance activities

Employee Experience

  • Assist with employee wellbeing, engagement, and recognition initiatives
  • Coordinate HR events and organisational activities
  • Provide administrative support across HR projects and programs

About You

We're looking for someone who is organised, proactive, and eager to learn.

You may be:

  • A recent Human Resources graduate
  • Studying HR and looking to build practical experience
  • An HR Administrator or Coordinator seeking broader exposure
  • An Executive Assistant or Administrator wanting to transition into HR
  • Someone with strong administration experience and a genuine interest in people and workplace culture

To be successful, you'll have:

  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills
  • Strong attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Professional communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and business systems
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • A collaborative and positive approach to work

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant qualification in Human Resources, Business, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Current Employee Working With Children Check
  • Current Victorian Driver Licence
  • National Criminal History Check
  • Full Australian working rights
