Job Role
The role of the Industrial Officer: Work, Health and Safety and Workers Compensation is to coordinate and resource activities covering WHS and workers compensation activities relevant to Unions NSW and the NSW union movement.
The role will have a key focus on training, campaigning and resourcing the NSW union movement to effectively use the legislative changes in the Industrial Relations and Other Legislative Amendment (Workplace Protections) Bill 2025 and other relevant legislation to improve workplace safety.
The position will also be required to assist with other industrial relations activities from time to time while working as part of a team of skilled and experienced industrial officers and campaigners implementing the Unions NSW strategic plan.
Responsibilities
- Developing and coordinating training, campaigning, advice and resourcing the NSW union movement to effectively use the legislative changes in the Industrial Relations and Other Legislative Amendment (Workplace Protections) Bill 2025 and other relevant legislation to improve workplace safety.
- Triaging and prioritising advocacy and consultation opportunities for Unions NSW relating to WHS and workers compensation.
- Liaising with the ACTU, State and Federal Governments’ and non-government organisations on WHS and workers’ compensation matters relevant to Unions NSW and the NSW union movement.
- Making resources, training and advice available to Unions NSW and affiliates on WHS and workers compensation matters.
- Coordinating and preparing Unions NSW and union movement submissions to relevant inquiries, consultations and conferences.
- Coordinating forums and conferences covering WHS and workers compensation.
- Coordinating the provision of workers compensation training relevant to Unions NSW and the NSW union movement including Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
- Write and submit tenders for relevant WHS and workers compensation funding opportunities.
- Manage additional WHS and workers compensation funding and project resources when they become available for example managing the Injured Workers Campaign Network.
- Travel as required to work with affiliates and partner organisations across NSW and Australia where required.
- Represent Unions NSW on WHS and Workers Compensation bodies and forums or identify relevant union representatives to participate on those bodies and forums.
- Communicate and provide clear, concise and accurate reports and collaborate professionally with internal and external peers, stakeholders and clients to promote Unions NSW.
- Assist with other industrial matters and perform all other duties as directed, within the limits of skill, competence and training to maximise organisational flexibility and effectiveness.
Essential Criteria:
Qualifications
- Qualifications in Law, WHS or relevant experience in WHS and Workers Compensation.
- Minimum 3 years PAE experience.
- Will consider candidates with experience at equivalent level working as an Industrial Officer for a union.
Skills and Competencies
- Experience in WHS and/or Workers Compensation, negotiations and bargaining.
- Experience in advocacy and case management.
- Experience in policy development and drafting responses to Parliamentary inquiries.
- Capacity to prioritise work, exercise judgement, initiative, while providing high level support within a highly charged environment.
- Ability to work independently and manage conflicting demands in an environment subject to sudden change.
- Willingness and ability to adapt to varied demands, including out of hours work, sometimes at short notice.
- High level of interpersonal and communication skills and including public speaking.
- High level problem solving and decision making skills.
- A clear understanding and commitment to trade union principles.
- Well-developed information technology skills with proven competence in the application of Microsoft Office suite
Desirable Criteria
- Bilingual / multilingual.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
- Entry Permit Training qualification.
Conditions and Entitlements
- Personal Leave: 10 days per annum (accumulative)
- Annual Leave: 5 weeks annual leave with 17.5% leave loading
- Long Service Leave: 2 months after 10 years’ service
- Superannuation: Extra 2% for female staff
- Parental Leave: 22 weeks paid parental leave or 4 weeks paid parental leave non-primary carer
Salary will be subject to qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
