The Opportunity

The Domestic Violence Specialist Children’s Service (DVSCS) is one component of Tangentyere’s Family Violence Prevention Programs (FVPP). The FVPP is an integrated program with components designed to meet the needs of men, women, young people and children who have been affected by issues of domestic and family violence, as well as primary prevention work, and also consists of a Men’s Behaviour Change Program, the Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group, and the Young Women’s Family Safety Group.

The DVSCS provides specialist early intervention support for Aboriginal young people, aged between 12 and 18, who have been impacted by domestic and family violence.

  • By creating age-appropriate and gender-based family and domestic violence critical interventions and youth informed services, the DVSCS is designed to:
  • Support young people’s understanding of domestic and family violence through education, and to provide frameworks for relationships that are respectful, safe and free from violence
  • Increase the safety, health and wellbeing of young people, their families and the broader community
  • Contribute to intergenerational change by shifting harmful attitudes and beliefs around gender, masculinity, and violence in relationships

The development and delivery of the Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Children’s Services will complement the work already achieved by the Alice Springs Response to Domestic and Family Violence and will build on strong interagency relationships to ensure the best outcomes for children and young people impacted by violence, as well as their families and community.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver case management services to young Aboriginal people aged between 12 and 18 years, working alongside them, their families, and communities, with a focus on preventing domestic and family violence related harm, and strengthening their capacity to improve their safety and wellbeing.
  • Facilitation of domestic and family violence education group programs delivered to young Aboriginal young people, with the intent of equipping them with knowledge and skills that will support them to have safe and respectful relationships. Groups are held in settings including, but not limited to, the Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre and local schools.
  • Facilitation of domestic and family violence education group programs delivered to staff who work alongside young people, with the intent of increasing the capacity of the service sector to respond to issues relating to domestic and family violence and increasing the safety of young people with experiences of domestic and family violence.
  • Working alongside the Tangentyere Women’s, Young Women’s, and Men’s Family Safety Groups to inform service delivery, and ensure that the program is culturally safe and responsive to the needs of the community.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate stakeholder relationships, including but not limited to local NGO’s and other youth services, lawyers, Territory Families, schools, and police.
  • Maintain relevant documentation, including transparent, comprehensive case notes and contribute to written project reports as required.
  • Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

  • Experienced in working with young people, have knowledge of the issues relating to working within the field of domestic and family violence.
  • Completed tertiary studies in Social Work, Youth Work, Welfare Studies, Psychology, or a related discipline; relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience of providing a holistic response to children and/or young people experiencing or at risk of harm due to domestic and family violence.
  • Demonstrated understanding of domestic and family violence.
  • Experience in working alongside Aboriginal people, and/or a demonstrated ability to work in a cross-cultural context.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cohesively and contribute effectively within a team environment.
  • Current NT Drivers Licence, NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desirable

  • An understanding of Aboriginal culture as well as a broad range of contemporary issues affecting Central Australian Aboriginal people.
  • Knowledge and experience of providing a range of relevant intervention strategies, and use of frameworks in practice, including the cycle of violence, children and young people’s developmental needs, trauma informed practice, crisis, and safety planning.
  • Experience in group facilitation.
  • Demonstrated experience in working alongside and/or providing case management to young people with complex needs, including young people who have Neurodevelopmental disorders (including Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder).
  • Experience in writing case notes, and ability to contribute to written work both independently and as part of the team, as required. Training can be provided for the right candidate if required.
