Role Overview:

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) aims to achieve equitable access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for all people with a disability who meet eligibility requirements. The NDIA recognises that there are additional challenges in engaging with and providing a service to diverse and hard to reach populations.

The Community Connector role is to connect and link CALD people with disabilities or their carers to the NDIS. Many individuals and communities have additional barriers to access the NDIS, including language and cultural differences, and/or disassociation from broader community as a result of discrimination or trauma. This role has been developed to address these challenges faced by CALD people who have been unable to access the Scheme or are facing difficulties in using the Scheme to its full potential. The desired outcome of this role is to for CALD people with disabilities and careers to better understand the NDIS; successfully engage with the NDIS; receive higher quality plans through enhanced understanding of the processes of the NDIS.

This position will be on a fixed-term full-time basis (35 hours a week) and will end on 25th June 2021.

Key Accountabilities:

Engage

  • Improve awareness and knowledge of participants, potential participants and communities about the NDIS and about disability more broadly.
  • Reduce barriers to accessing the NDIS by providing assertive outreach to people with a disability and their carers.
  • Engage with clients in order to explain the NDIS planning and assessment process and the role of the community connector and the NDIS.

Connect

  • Connect with the community to share information about the NDIS, broader supports and how they can support people with disabilities.
  • Identify and establish positive and productive relationships between clients and the NDIA.
  • Connect with the NDIA through the employer and with Partners in the Community (PITC) on how to improve access, planning and service delivery outcomes.
  • Provide a link and improve referral pathways and coordination of supports between community members’ particular needs to the available resources e.g mobility, employment or accommodation, government services and programs.

Collaborate

  • Collaborate with employer to effectively engage target cohorts.
  • Support communication between NDIA and community and participants.

Advise

  • Advise on how to improve access, planning and service delivery outcomes for CALD people with disabilities.
  • Complete regular reports that will track the progress and challenges relating to engagement.  

Essential Criteria

This needs to be addressed on a separate document.

  •  Diploma in Community Services, Degree/ Grad Certificate in Social work, Cert IV in Community Development is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, facilitate, promote and evaluate programs and events including meetings, training and community programs.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in working with CALD communities and people living with disabilities.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to enable engagement with CALD families and communities.
  • Speak one or more of the languages commonly spoken within the LGA is desirable.
  • Existing connections with disability service providers in the region and demonstrated experience in community engagement is desirable.
  • Demonstrated values of integrity, reliability, professionalism and a commitment to quality and continuous improvement
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Satisfactory Working with Children Check & National Police Check required.
  • Current driver’s licence and access to a fully registered motor vehicle.
