Since 1997, Katherine Women’s Information & Legal Service (KWILS) has been committed to advancing women’s rights by providing free legal services for those who identify as women and non-binary people experiencing disadvantage in Katherine and the Big Rivers Region.

Through a culturally sensitive and trauma-informed approach, KWILS provides legal advice and representation for clients in the areas of family and civil law, specialising in domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) and deliver integrated support services, creating a holistic experience for their clients.

KWILS is dedicated to driving legal and cultural changes to correct power imbalances, combat violence against women and children, and tackle gender and other inequalities, ensuring women can live in safety with dignity and respect.

Your Impact

You will be responsible for providing legal assistance to clients throughout Katherine and the Big Rivers region in key practice areas of law including family law, child protection and domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV). Specifically, you will:

  • Maintain a caseload of complex legal matters with limited supervision
  • In collaboration with the PLO supervise, mentor and train solicitors
  • Conduct regular outreach services across the Big Rivers Region, including attendance at bush court circuits
  • Collaborate on the design and delivery of legal education, information and outreach services to the community
  • Develop and nurture a wide range of stakeholder relationships in collaboration with the Support Services team

What you bring

You are a solicitor who is committed to advancing and promoting the interests of women. As an open-minded individual with a naturally empathetic style, you can easily communicate information in a sensitive manner when dealing with diverse clients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse and migrant backgrounds. You are also ready to step up and take on supervision and mentoring delegations.

Additionally, you have:

  • A practicing certificate in Northern Territory or are eligible to obtain one
  • Subject matter expertise in family law and/or DFSV and/or child protection
  • An understanding or capacity to develop an understanding to working in a trauma-informed framework
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Highly effective stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills; an ability to build trust and collaboration with a cross section of the community and sector partners
  • A valid driver’s licence and a Northern Territory Ochre Card and Police Clearance (or willing to obtain one)
