ORGANISATION DESCRIPTION

Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association, is the national peak body representing sex workers and sex worker organisations, projects, groups, and networks.

Scarlet Alliance’s mission statement is to, through its objectives, policies and programs, work to advance Sex Worker Rights with the achievement of equality and social, legal, political, cultural health and economic justice for past and present workers in the sex industry to enable sex workers to be self-determining agents, build our own alliances and choose where and how we live and work.

Reporting directly to the National Programs Manager, the Communications Officer is responsible for coordinating all of Scarlet Alliance’s communications and resources through a wide variety of channels to raise the profile and awareness of Scarlet Alliance and of issues affecting sex workers.

The Communications Officer will:

  • Coordinate the dissemination and maintenance of Scarlet Alliance’s communications and resources through channels such as website, social media, and other external facing platforms to ensure emerging research, program updates, success stories and reports of progress reach their target audiences, and are consistently branded.
  • Lead the strategy, planning, development and implementation of program communications including effectively disseminating information (briefs, webinars, social media posts etc.) to produce impact in line with the organisation’s objectives and goals.
  • Develop, coordinate the production of, and maintain a range of communications, resources and collateral for internal and external use including web-based and print for Scarlet Alliance.
  • Use various design software to develop innovative graphic designs aligned with Scarlet Alliance’s brand image.
  • Maintain the Scarlet Alliance website.
  • Measure and report on the impact of communications channels, materials and publications, and provide regular updates on these metrics to collaborators, managers and other stakeholders

POSITION LOCATION

The position will be based at the Scarlet Alliance Sydney office with flexible work arrangements available. Exceptional candidates from outside of Sydney will be considered. Some evening and weekend work and interstate travel may also be required, subject to your availability.

SALARY & CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

This is a permanent part-time position of 0.5 FTE (19 hours/week, 2.5 days/week) paid at the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 Level 5, ($44.92 per hour, pro rata $88,757.76 per annum) and subject to the National Employment Standards.

Salary sacrifice is available for this position.

TRAINING/ORIENTATION

The start-up phase for this position includes a comprehensive orientation and opportunities for training.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA (Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities):

Essential

  1. Sex work experience and demonstrated understanding of the principles of human rights and sex worker rights.
  2. Previous copywriting experience.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of accessibility (e.g. WCAG 2.1, Easy English) and ability to produce accessible resources, or a willingness to undergo training in this area.
  4. Strong computer skills including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, file management, internet and email.
  5. Strong design software skills including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
  6. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the current issues related to the diversity of sex worker populations in Australia, and a high-level understanding of the current issues for sex workers in Australia.
  7. Demonstrated experience or ability to identify, assess, and meet resource and information needs.
  8. Highly developed oral and written communication and listening skills to interpret and deliver key messages and information to a range of audiences including using Plain English.
  9. Creative with a high level of attention to detail, organisational, prioritisation and time management skills.
  10. Demonstrated cross-cultural skills and knowledge and demonstrated knowledge of culturally appropriate work practices.
  11. A desire, willingness and ability to work with other sex workers, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people who inject drugs, trans and gender diverse people, and people living with HIV.

Desirable (not essential)

  1. Tertiary qualifications in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, Journalism.
  2. Experience working or volunteering in community organisations in Australia or elsewhere.
