Scarlet Alliance, National Sex Workers Association, is the national peak body representing sex workers and sex worker organisations, projects, groups, and networks in unceeded Australia.
Scarlet Alliance’s mission statement is to, through its objectives, policies, and programs, work to advance Sex Worker Rights with the achievement of equality and social, legal, political, cultural health and economic justice for past and present workers in the sex industry to enable sex workers to be self-determining agents, build our own alliances and choose where and how we live and work.
Accountable to the Committee of Scarlet Alliance, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has overall responsibility to effectively and efficiently lead and drive all aspects of the organisation to achieve its strategic and operational objectives, visions, and mission statement.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for effectively and efficiently leading and managing all aspects of the organisation to ensure the organisation’s strategic and operational objectives are achieved in line with its core values, visions, and mission statement.
THE CEO is ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
- Developing, executing, and reporting on organisational and financial plans, strategies, goals, and objectives for Scarlet Alliance in consultation with the Committee.
- Developing and implementing Scarlet Alliance’s culture and values.
- Leading and managing the daily operations of Scarlet Alliance.
- Achieving the visions, objectives, and goals of Scarlet Alliance.
- Increasing the profile of Scarlet Alliance.
- Providing advice to Scarlet Alliance on advocacy and lobbying approaches.
- Communicating on behalf of and representing Scarlet Alliance to external bodies, including coordinating media responses.
- Overseeing all funding submissions and ensuring adequate funding to support the ongoing activities and development of Scarlet Alliance.
- Ensuring effective financial management and ensuring appropriate financial controls and procedures are in place and the organisation is compliant.
- Providing direct supervision, support, leadership, and mentoring to all staff.

SALARY & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a permanent full-time position of 1 FTE paid above Level 8 award (Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010) at $137,000 to $142,000 per annum + on costs, depending on skills and experience and subject to the National Employment Standards.
Salary sacrifice/packaging is available for this position.
LOCATION
Sydney-based is preferred, at the Scarlet Alliance office in Erskineville, with hybrid working arrangements offered. Evening and weekend work, interstate, and international travel will also be required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Sex work experience and a demonstrated understanding of issues affecting sex workers in Australia is an essential requirement of this position.
You must address each essential criterion in your application, otherwise it will be assumed you do not meet the requirements.
Essential
- Sex work experience and a demonstrated understanding of the principles of human rights and sex worker rights.
- Tertiary qualifications in relevant fields, or equivalent work experience.
- Extensive demonstrated experience in leading and effectively managing all aspects of a community-based peer project/organisation.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse national and international developments that impact on sex workers to ensure Scarlet Alliance’s advocacy and policy positions remain current.
- Knowledge of political systems and experience in developing and maintaining relationships with Ministers, Ministerial advisors, and government decision-makers to support desired outcomes.
- Experience in managing media and communication strategies and an ability to represent Scarlet Alliance in public forums.
- Proven commitment to sex worker leadership, consultative work practices, and accountability to community.
- Strong financial management skills, including experience developing and managing budgets.
- Excellent interpersonal professional relationship management skills, including mediation, negotiation, conciliation, problem solving, dispute, and conflict resolution skills for handling and resolving complex issues.
- Strong forward planning and strategic-thinking skills.
- Knowledge of the HIV sector and issues related to HIV, STI, and BBV prevention.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills, with the ability to influence, inspire, develop, motivate, and drive performance of people at all levels.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural skills and knowledge and demonstrated knowledge of culturally appropriate work practices.
Desirable (not essential)
- Experience in best practice health promotion, harm reduction, and peer education.
- Experience in managing sex worker organisations, projects or collectives.
- Prior Executive Director and/or CEO experience with peer led advocacy and initiatives.
