Redfern Legal Centre is a non-profit community legal centre that promotes social justice and creates change. We provide free legal advice, legal services and education to people experiencing disadvantage in New South Wales.  We drive innovation and change through policy and law reform work to address inequalities in the legal system, policies and social practices that cause disadvantage.

We provide effective and integrated free legal services that are client focussed, collaborative, non-discriminatory and responsive to changing community needs - to our local community as well as state-wide. Our specialist legal services focus on tenancy, credit, debt and consumer law, financial abuse, employment law, international students, First Nations justice, police accountability, and provide outreach services including through our health justice partnership. 

Position Overview

The Assistant Principal Solicitor supports the Principal Solicitor in managing the legal practice.

The role will supervise specialist practice areas which may include, subject to expertise, police accountability, general civil law, family law, tenancy law, employment law, child protection, and minor criminal law.

This is an in office role with a minimum of four days per week (pro rata for part time) required in the office.

Position Responsibilities

  • Supervise Practices, Senior Solicitors and Solicitors, including regular person-centred supervision meetings, checking and signing off on advices, conducting file reviews, ensuring compliance with the Risk Management Guide and Legal Practice Manual, supporting staff with training and development needs and relaying issues to management as appropriate.
  • Support the Intake team and legal staff to manage conflicts of interest and ethical issues.
  • Manage difficult situations with clients and client complaints.
  • Onboard new staff and plan or fill in for staff on leave by supporting Volunteer Solicitors in relation to the provision and signing off on advice.
  • Support the Principal Solicitor to maintain and develop Actionstep, the client management database, and Intake processes, including web forms, intake criteria and processes.
  • Review fact sheets, CLE materials and submissions.
  • Contribute to the execution of the Redfern Legal Centre strategic plan, including through contribution to team and practice area workplans and theory of change plans
  • Contribute to development of strategic priorities for law reform and advocacy work, and collaboration, partnerships and stakeholder relationships.
  • Contribute to Redfern Legal Centre through attendance at staff meetings, contribution to board and funding reports, assistance with intake including intake supervision shifts, and contribution to the effective implementation of our Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Other legal practice management tasks, as appropriate.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

  1. Qualified to practice as a solicitor in NSW, holds or is eligible to hold a current practicing certificate and at least 6 years post-admission experience in relevant areas of law.
  2. Strong technical legal skills in relevant areas of law.
  3. Demonstrated ability to supervise lawyers to provide high quality and trauma informed legal services that comply with internal and professional requirements.
  4. Demonstrated ability to consider and resolve ethical dilemmas and conflicts of interest.
  5. Demonstrated ability to manage difficult situations with clients and client complaints.
  6. Excellent communication skills and high ethical standards and professionalism.
  7. Demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen stakeholder relationships and strategic collaborations
  8. Demonstrated ability to drive systemic reform through development of and contribution to policy and advocacy work.
  9. Demonstrated ability to manage time and multiple competing deadlines and tasks.
  10. Commitment to social justice and the objectives of Community Legal Centres. 

Conditions

Salary and benefits: $149,909.43 p.a. (pro rata for part time).  This salary will increase by 4.75% in line with Redfern Legal Centre’s Enterprise Agreement from 6 July 2026.

Superannuation and annual leave loading are paid in addition to this and salary packaging is available.

Redfern Legal Centre offers a 35-hour working week, time in lieu options and a paid end of year closure of two weeks (including public holidays) on top of four weeks annual leave.  We prioritise staff wellbeing through external debrief supervision, a generous training and professional development budget and flexible working conditions.
