However, the current Victorian story is one that reflects today's challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state. While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by a range of primary health services that address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.

About the Role

The Flying Doctor Oral Health team are excited to be growing our presence in regional and remote communities across Victoria, where we provide oral health care to communities that would otherwise not have easy access.

The role is so much more than a regular Clinical Lead or Senior Dentist role! Imagine working in your chosen profession, all while being able to explore parts of Victoria that you may not have visited before; where communities embrace your presence with warmth and appreciation.

The Oral Health Clinical Lead plays a key role in delivering high-quality dental care while providing clinical leadership and governance across the RFDS Oral Health Service. This position combines direct patient care with oversight of clinical quality, safety, risk management and continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring excellence across all RFDS dental services. With approximately 75 percent of time dedicated to clinical dental practice and 25 percent focused on leadership and governance responsibilities, the role supports best-practice oral health outcomes for rural and remote communities across Victoria through service delivery at both fixed and mobile locations.

While this role will be based in our Mitcham office as a primary location, this role will require regular travel to fixed and mobile clinic locations across regional and remote Victoria, including overnight and weekend stays, to ensure the effective delivery of oral health services to rural and remote communities.

Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

Clinical Leadership & Governance

• Lead and maintain compliance with NSQPCH Standards, ISO 9001 requirements and other relevant clinical governance frameworks across RFDS Oral Health services.
• Provide clinical leadership, including staff credentialling, scope of practice oversight, education, training and mentoring for clinicians, volunteers and students.
• Oversee the management of clinical risks, incidents, complaints and quality improvement activities, ensuring safe, effective and evidence-based care.
• Coordinate clinical audits, monitor service outcomes and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and patient safety.
• Provide expert advice on dental equipment, instruments and materials, and contribute to service planning, evaluation and reporting activities.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and support the Oral Health Service Lead in achieving service objectives.

Clinical Dental Services

• Provide high-quality preventive and therapeutic dental care, including patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, within scope of practice and organisational requirements.
• Collaborate with patients, team members and stakeholders to ensure coordinated care and positive client experiences.

To be successful, you will need:

• Current, unrestricted registration with AHPRA as a General Dentist, with no conditions or undertakings, and eligibility to practise in Australia.
• A relevant tertiary qualification in Dentistry, along with a minimum of three years' clinical experience practising as a Dentist in Australia.
• Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership and foster a culture of quality, safety, risk management and continuous improvement within a healthcare setting.
• Advanced clinical skills in the delivery of comprehensive dental care, including patient assessment, treatment planning, infection prevention and control, record keeping and health promotion.
• A commitment to evidence-based practice, with the ability to apply current clinical guidelines, monitor outcomes and drive service improvements.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and mentoring skills, with the ability to build capability and support multidisciplinary teams across multiple locations.
• A current driver's licence and a current MR licence (or willingness to obtain), and evidence of required vaccinations, including COVID-19 and Influenza. Previous experience delivering mobile dental services will be highly regarded.
• Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.
