The Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation focused on using strategic legal action to promote or protect the human rights of people in need, policy solutions and advocacy to support people and communities to eliminate inequality and injustice and build a fairer, more compassionate Australia.

The vision of HRLC is an Australia where everyone is free to lead a decent, dignified life, where our laws, policies and institutions promote fairness and equality, and where people and communities have the power to address inequality and injustice, and ensure that governments always act in the public interest.

The HRLC’s principal purpose is to relieve the suffering or distress of people whose human rights are compromised or abused by, without limitation: providing support to those in need; taking legal action to promote or protect the human rights of people in need; advising governments on and reviewing law, policy and practice to ensure human rights are upheld; conducting and disseminating research on human rights abuses; and providing education about human rights.

The Centre’s 2030 Strategic Plan currently reflects an ambitious agenda due for a periodic review this calendar year. The plan aims include the following new priority areas for action planning: the impact of climate change on human rights; the impact of new technology on human rights; and how we can build on our existing work to promote the rights of people with disabilities.

The Chief Executive Officer is an exciting position leading one of Australia’s major human rights advocacy organisations and highest impact non-profits. This role will empower, support and manage a talented team of around 30 staff and secondee lawyers and manage an annual budget of around $3.5 million. In addition to the staff team, the Human Rights Law Centre also benefits from significant pro bono support from law firms and barristers. Reporting to the Board, the CEO will work with the board to further shape and implement HRLC’s Strategic Plan and will ensure that the HRLC has adequate human and financial resources to implement the Strategic Plan.

High quality candidates will have significant senior-level experience in management, the law, finance, policy, advocacy and media. They will have a commitment to and expertise in the application of international human rights principles and practice and an unrestricted legal practice certificate. The Board is particularly interested in candidates with lived experience of human rights issues, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse or migrant and refugee backgrounds. Credible candidates for the role will demonstrate the experience in leading structural and cultural change at complex organisations, and concern for and the capacity to monitor and manage staff workload in a busy advocacy environment. The future ability of candidates to facilitate donor support for the work of the HRLC will also be a consideration for the Board.
