An exciting opportunity exists with Ngaanyatjarra Council Regional Housing Program (NCRHP) for a Housing Officer to join our team based in Blackstone Community, in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands WA. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person with a strong interest in remote communities to make a real difference to the lives of Aboriginal people.

Ngaanyatjarra Council was incorporated in 1981 with the aim of supporting the development of all Ngaanyatjarra people. At the core of this work was assisting the Ngaanyatjarra Communities to be strong and sustainable with reliable essential services, air transport, bookkeeping, agency and road transport, fuel distribution, health services, community services and improved housing.

Ngaanyatjarra Council (Aboriginal Corporation) represents the interests of around 2000 Ngaanyatjarra, Pintupi and Pitjantjatjara people living in 12 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia. Today, Ngaanyatjarra Council is one of the largest Indigenous Corporations in Australia and has grown to be the major representative body for Ngaanyatjarra people.

Job Description

The Housing Officer is responsible for the management and promotion of better tenancy practices for all public housing residents in Ngaanyatjarra Lands.  

The Housing Officer is required to assist and advise tenants of their responsibilities thereby ensuring they comply with Department of Communities, Housing Authority requirements, local housing policies and procedures. 

Your day-to-day duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Ensure a tenancy agreement that outlines tenant rights and responsibilities, supporting tenancy forms, and an ingoing property condition report is in place for all Ngaanyatjarra public housing stock. 
  • Undertake ‘Routine Property Inspections’ assessments, in line with Housing Authority and Council guidelines of all residents within the Ngaanyatjarra Council Regional Housing Program (NCRHP).
  • Document information collected at the time of assessment using the appropriate Housing Authority assessment tools and internal systems.
  • Support other Tenancy Officer’s during peak periods. 
  • Arrange rent deduction, arrears forms and rent assessments from tenants as required. 
  • Report maintenance issues for Ngaanyatjarra public housing stock.
  • Contribute to the planning and review of the NCRHP service.
  • Ensure accurate tenancy data is provided to NCRHP Perth Office within a timely manner.
  • Participate and prepare for relevant internal and external meetings. 
  • Identify opportunities for service improvement.
  • Liaison with Ngaanyatjarra Community Development Administrators (CDA) in relation to community and tenancy matters.
  • Liaison with community council to confirm sorry time, tenant absence and tenancy allocations. 

About You:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, use initiative and model resilience.
  • High-level reporting and computing skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, flexibility and a positive attitude.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict management.
  • Superb organisation and time-management skills and motivation.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal people (desirable).
