  • Term: 12 months (with the potential for a further term)
  • Reports to: Chairperson
  • Supervises: Aboriginal Outreach Worker, Programs Officer, Administration Officer, casual staff, contractors and volunteers
  • Work hours: 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5.00 pm (with reasonable additional hours outside of normal business hours)
  • Award: Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (Social and Community Services Employee)
  • Classification: Level 5 or 6 (can negotiate depending on skills and experience)

About Nairm Marr Djambana

Nairm Marr Djambana is an Aboriginal Gathering Place and Neighbourhood House that provides services, programs and activities for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the Frankston area. We aim to strengthen the health and wellbeing of the fast growing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and to drive strong social, economic and cultural outcomes for the community.

Our dream is to continue on the journey our Elders started to create a culturally welcoming, safe and accessible space for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community – a place to gather, connect, heal and have a sense of belonging.

About the role

The Gathering Place Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation, management and development of Nairm Marr Djambana. This includes the development, implementation and evaluation of programs, activities and projects for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the Frankston area.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities

Programs and projects

  • Develop, implement and evaluate community development programs, activities and projects

Staff management

  • Recruit, induct and train staff and volunteers
  • Supervise staff and volunteers (including staff development, performance reviews and management)
  • Help to build skills and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Ensure that staff are aware of and understand organisational policies and procedures

Community development

  • Undertake community development processes to identify the needs, priorities and aspirations of the community
  • Apply community development principles

Coordination

  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers, contractors, consultants and outreach services

Engagement

  • Undertake engagement with key partners and stakeholders
  • Participate in relevant networks
  • Facilitate community engagement
  • Create a culturally safe, welcoming environment

Budgeting and funding

  • Develop, implement and monitor operational budgets
  • Identify and apply for funding opportunities
  • Ensure compliance with funding agreements, including preparing and submitting reports for funding bodies
  • Management of contract obligations

Marketing

  • Oversee marketing and promotional activities
  • Increase participation in programs and activities

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the Neighbourhood House Program Guidelines and service agreement
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and organisational policies and procedures
  • Align with our values and guiding principles
  • Maintain a safe and clean workspace in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements

Working with the Board

  • Provide reports and advice to the Board as required
  • Support the Board to develop and implement Nairm Marr Djambana’s strategic and business plans
  • Identify and escalate organisational risks to the Board
  • Support the Board to prepare the Annual Report
  • Other duties as reasonably required by the Board
  • Occasional attendance at Board meetings

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

Qualifications and experience

  • Qualifications in community development (or equivalent) and/or extensive experience in the community sector or in a similar role
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities (highly desirable)
  • Drivers licence and car (highly desirable)
  • Satisfactory police check and Working with Children Check
