The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is seeking an outstanding executive leader to take on the role of Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Corporate Services). This is a rare opportunity to shape the operational future of one of Australia's most respected scientific institutions at a pivotal moment in its evolution.
As Australia's leading tropical marine research agency, AIMS delivers the science that supports the sustainable management and protection of our marine environment. From Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, across northern Australia and the Torres Strait, to the Great Barrier Reef, AIMS' research addresses some of the most complex environmental challenges facing tropical marine ecosystems, helping governments, industries and communities make informed decisions for the future.
AIMS has recently launched its ambitious Strategy 2040, setting a bold direction for the organisation's future impact, capability and contribution to safeguarding tropical marine ecosystems in a rapidly changing world. The opportunity to help shape and deliver the next phase of this strategy will be particularly attractive to leaders motivated by influence, innovation and meaningful impact.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Deputy CEO (Corporate Services) leads a broad portfolio encompassing Finance, People and Culture, Governance and Legal, Compliance and Integrity, Procurement, Health, Safety and Environment, Risk, and Organisational Performance. As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will provide strategic leadership across the organisation, ensuring AIMS has the people, systems, governance and operational capability required to deliver on its mission and long-term strategic objectives.
This is a role for a leader who can balance strategic vision with operational excellence, aligning corporate services with scientific priorities, strengthening organisational capability, and fostering a culture where people can perform at their best. In doing so, you will help create the foundations that enable world-leading marine science to thrive.
The successful candidate will bring a track record of senior executive leadership within a complex organisation, coupled with strong strategic, commercial and financial acumen. You will have experience overseeing significant budgets, governance, risk and organisational performance, with the ability to translate strategy into tangible outcomes. Experience within research, science, government or publicly funded environments will be highly regarded; however, AIMS welcomes leaders from diverse sectors who can demonstrate success navigating complexity, leading enterprise-wide change and supporting purpose-driven organisations to achieve ambitious goals. Above all, you will be a values-led executive who leads with integrity, accountability and respect, and who is committed to fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture where people can thrive.
AIMS acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia's first scientists. We pay our deepest respects to Elders past, present and future, and the custodians of the land and sea country on which we work. Learn more about our commitment to Indigenous partnerships.
AIMS was awarded Athena Swan Bronze status in 2020 by the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) program. This award recognises AIMS' commitment to improving gender equity, diversity and inclusion in STEMM disciplines.
