In May 2022, Kylea Tink was elected as the first ever female independent to represent the federal seat of North Sydney on a platform that emphasised the opportunity to do politics differently, with the focus being shifted from party ideology to true community representation.

As we move into the final 18 months of this 47th Parliament, Kylea is looking for a Community Organiser to prepare for, and subsequently manage, the next election campaign.

This is an exciting time in Australian politics. The community independent movement has delivered strong, sensible independents to federal parliament and they are doing politics differently by listening to and directly advocating for the electorates they represent.

Kylea and her team are committed to bringing the community’s voice to the Federal Parliament and participating in open and respectful debate. They are driven by the values of authenticity and accountability; curiosity and creativity; community mindedness; ambition and optimism; courage and fun.

The successful applicant will be driven by the desire to not only deliver real change for the North Sydney community but will believe in the power of community centred politics to drive long term, sustainable and positive change right across our country.

Key measures of success in this role will include:

  • Being able to work with multiple stakeholders to create a plan for re-election, ensure each stakeholder is clear on their roles and responsibilities
  • Volunteer engagement: including volunteer registrations, volunteer participation and mobilisation rates
  • The re-election of Kylea as the Independent MP for North Sydney

While you will have support from external agencies, contractors and other resources from within Kylea’s team, your role will ultimately be very hands-on, so you will be comfortable with all facets of campaign work.

The key elements of running a successful election campaign project involve the following responsibilities:

  • Strong project management skills
  • Confidence in working with campaign communications, materials and fundraising support
  • Community organising skills, training and development of volunteer teams including door knocking, phone banking, public speaking and social media
  • Strong risk and compliance expertise
  • Excellent financial management skills including expenditure and reporting
  • Capacity to conceive and implement community events
  • Campaign reporting

Key responsibilities

Project Management:

  • Identify and maintain an approved program of work in support of the campaign strategy
  • Coordinate staff team, volunteers, service providers and resources to ensure project outcomes are achieved
  • Work closely with the communications team to ensure materials are on message and within budget
  • Report project status regularly to Kylea Tink MP and the Board of Kylea Tink Independent (KTI) Ltd

Campaign Communications, Materials and Fundraising Support:

  • Identify key stages in the campaign plan requiring communications support and draft content for approval
  • Work closely with the CESG (Community Engagement Steering Committee) to plan marketing material when required
  • Manage and coordinate the preparation, printing, distribution and collation of campaign materials and merchandise both online and printed
  • Build a volunteer social media team to boost and share Kylea’s social media posts across FB pages
  • Identify and share potential fundraising opportunities with the KTI Board

Community Events:

  • Plan and oversee events to attract supporters and connect with constituents
  • Plan and oversee town hall style events with Kylea to give constituents the opportunity to meet her and ask questions

Community Organising:

  • Work closely with the CESG to mobilise volunteers
  • Recruit new people into the organising effort
  • Identify and utilise skills in the volunteer base to take on key roles
  • Identify, train and lead volunteers and volunteer leaders
  • Run events to help the community develop their constructive conversation skills
  • Build on existing data and campaign systems to deepen Kylea’s understanding of and engagement with her electorate
  • Facilitate meaningful contact with voters that measurably changes the voting behaviour of the electorate via door knocking, phone-banking and street stalls
  • Build awareness of TeamTINK via merchandise and marketing material distribution

Risk & Compliance:

  • Develop strong relationships with the office team and KTI Board, particularly around electoral compliance, WHS, data and media
  • Identify, assess and document broad risks to the campaign and appropriate mitigation strategies
  • Manage issues and incidents that occur during the election campaign in accordance with the approved risk management strategies
  • Advise on changes to policy, processes and the associated control environment
  • Provide status reports to the KTI Board on risk issues

Expenditure and Reporting:

  • Manage expenditure in accordance with the approved campaign budget, complying with expenditure and procurement approval policies

Additional requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a senior or project management role in a large-scale election, or on issues campaigns, delivering to timeframes and within budget in a complex compliance environment
  • Budget management and good financial literacy
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisation skills in managing competing deadlines
  • Experience managing volunteers
  • Well-developed political judgement and a thorough understanding of current Australian and NSW political issues and the political system
  • An understanding of community independents and support for the principals and policies that Kylea Tink MP stands for
  • Proficient in Google Drive; campaign CRMs (experience with Nation Builder and VoterID would be highly valued) and community organising software
