Kara Family Violence Service (also known as Kara House Inc.) is a not-for-profit organisation providing safety, support and education for people affected by family violence. Our specialist service provides high-security crisis accommodation, case management, outreach support, secondary consultations, and community education programs across the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. We support those experiencing family violence, including women and children of all ages. We are committed to the inclusion and safety of people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQ+ and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. THE OPPORTUNITY
Are you a creative communicator with a passion for social impact? We’re looking for a driven Communications & Fundraising Officer to help us grow our reach, diversify our income, and deepen engagement with our community—all in support of people escaping family violence.
In this purpose-led role, you’ll lead strategic communication and fundraising initiatives that bring our mission to life. You’ll craft compelling campaigns, build strong relationships with donors and partners, and develop innovative approaches to storytelling and engagement across digital and traditional channels.

REPORTING DIRECTLY TO THE CEO
- Develop and create a Communications Strategic Plan that secures and sustains relationships and income streams.
- Create and maintain client service and communication materials that reflect the organisational brand
- Ensure consistent brand tone across all print and digital communication channels and manage the charity’s tone of voice and visual identity across all platforms
- Coordinate design and distribution of communications to supporters, volunteers, and community members
- Write and edit compelling stories and case studies that highlight the organisations impact for both industry partners and donor community
- Have a strong understanding of social media how to create and develop strategic digital communications.
- Develop segmented content for newsletters, website and appeals and use storytelling techniques to share client-informed impact and organisational updates.
- Use email, CRM segmentation, marketing strategies, social media and other digital tools to grow and convert donors and followers.
- Develop a Fundraising and Relationship strategy for opportunities such a donor, grants, philanthropic funding
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with donors and supporters
- Coordinate and manage the end-to-end process for accepting, receiving, and recording all financial and in-kind donations, ensuring timely acknowledgment, accurate documentation, and strong ongoing relationships with donors and partners.
- Maintain and build accurate donor records and performance metric

WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- At least 4 years’ experience in communications and fundraising, donor relations, or similar income-generating roles, ideally with a relevant qualification or certificate.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to craft compelling donor content and build meaningful external relationships.
- Experience in marketing and developing communication
- Confidence in Adobe Suite or Canva (or other platforms) to create content
- Experience or familiarity with community fundraising, segmentation strategy, and data-informed donor engagement.
- Digital confidence, including experience with CRMs (e.g. Givenow), email marketing tools (e.g. Salesforce, Mailchimp).
- Experience or familiarity with community fundraising, segmentation strategy, and data-informed donor engagement.
- Understanding of brand personality and it’s importance
- Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills
- Excellent project management abilities
- High level interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and a friendly disposition
- Strong administration and organisational skills with good attention to detail and accuracy
- Good time management and prioritisation skills and an ability to work autonomously
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
