About the Role 

The Executive Manager Finance is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership across the organisation’s finance function. The role is accountable for ensuring strong financial governance, sustainability, compliance, reporting, budgeting, forecasting, payroll oversight, audit coordination, funding acquittals, and financial risk management.

The Executive Manager Finance plays a critical role in supporting organisational strategy through high-quality financial analysis, business partnering, and long-term financial planning. The position which forms part of the Executive Team, works closely with the CEO, other members of the Executive Team, Board, and Finance Audit and Risk Management Committee to deliver robust financial
stewardship and support informed decision-making.

The role leads the organisation’s finance operations and drives continuous improvement across financial systems, controls, policies, and processes. The Executive Manager Finance also contributes to organisational growth and sustainability through financial modelling, funding analysis, grant compliance, and strategic financial advice.

This role requires a hands-on and contemporary finance leader with strong commercial and analytical capability, excellent stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to lead a high-performing finance team in a values-driven and culturally responsive environment.

In this role, your key focus area will be: 

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Provide strategic financial advice and recommendations to the CEO and Executive Team to support organisational sustainability, growth, and operational effectiveness.
  • Lead the development and implementation of financial strategies aligned with the organisation’s strategic and operational objectives.
  • Support organisational planning through financial modelling, scenario analysis, forecasting, and resource allocation advice.
  • Provide financial insights and performance analysis to inform strategic decision-making and organisational priorities.
  • Contribute to organisational growth initiatives, funding submissions, and business development opportunities through robust financial analysis and planning.
  • Represent the finance function in executive and organisational planning discussions, ensuring financial considerations are integrated into decision-making. 

Governance and Board Support

  • Support the CEO and Board through the provision of high-quality financial reports, analysis, and governance documentation.
  • Prepare financial papers, dashboards, and reports for Board and committee meetings.
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of the Finance Audit and Risk Management Committee.
  • Ensure financial governance practices align with organisational and regulatory requirements.

Financial Management, Reporting and Compliance

  • Lead and manage the organisation’s annual budget, forecasts and long-term financial planning processes.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the CEO, Executive Team, Board and Finance Audit and Risk Management Committee.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with accounting standards, statutory obligations, funding agreements and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage organisational cash flow, investments and financial resources to ensure ongoing sustainability and effective operational performance.
  • Oversee all payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations and general accounting functions.
  • Coordinate and manage year-end financial processes, including audit preparation, funding acquittals and statutory reporting obligations.
  • Liaise with external auditors and regulatory bodies to ensure timely completion of audits and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, accounting standards, ACNC obligations, taxation requirements and contractual funding requirements.
  • Maintain robust financial controls and governance frameworks to safeguard organisational assets and minimise financial risk, fraud and non-compliance.
  • Ensure financial risks are identified, monitored, documented, and appropriately managed through governance frameworks and risk registers.

Business Partnering and Organisational Support

  • Partner collaboratively with the other executives, managers and leaders to build financial capability and support informed operational decision-making.
  • Provide high-quality financial analysis and reporting to support program performance, service planning and operational improvement.
  • Support managers in understanding financial performance, funding requirements and compliance obligations through an educative and collaborative approach.
  • Develop and deliver initiatives that improve financial literacy and accountability across the organisation.
  • Provide financial oversight and advice relating to grant applications, funding agreements, compliance reporting and acquittals.
  • Support organisational change initiatives and continuous improvement activities from a financial management perspective.

Systems, Controls and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of financial systems, policies, procedures and internal controls.
  • Drive improvements to financial reporting capability, data integrity, efficiency and organisational processes.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial and business processes to improve organisational effectiveness and service delivery.
  • Ensure accounting systems, financial records, and supporting documentation are maintained accurately and securely.
  • Contribute to broader organisational risk management, governance, and operational improvement initiatives as required. 

Leadership and People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team to deliver high-quality, responsive and customer-focused finance services.
  • Foster a positive team culture that promotes accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Develop clear work plans, priorities and performance expectations aligned with organisational goals.
  • Provide regular supervision, coaching, feedback and professional development opportunities to staff.
  • Support workforce capability development and succession planning within the finance function.
  • Promote and model organisational values and contribute to a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace culture.
  • Ensure compliance with work health and safety requirements, organisational policies and relevant legislation.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline, together with current CPA or CA accreditation.
  • Significant senior leadership experience in finance and accounting, preferably within the not-for-profit, community services, or purpose-driven sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience leading organisational budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cash flow management and long-term financial planning.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in financial governance, internal controls, compliance, risk management and audit processes.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic financial advice and translate complex financial information into meaningful insights for executive and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing payroll, funding acquittals, grant compliance, and statutory financial obligations.
  • Advanced financial modelling, analytical, and reporting capability, including high-level Excel skills.
  • Strong experience developing and improving financial systems, policies, procedures and organisational processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams within a collaborative and values-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and relationship management skills, with the ability to build trusted partnerships across all levels of the organisation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, drive continuous improvement, and operate effectively in complex and changing environments.
  • Strong computer literacy including Microsoft 365 and financial management systems such as MYOB AccountRight and Xero.
  • Commitment to culturally safe, inclusive and trauma-informed practice.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting Boards and Finance Audit and Risk Management Committees.
  • Experience in grant-funded organisations and managing government funding compliance
    requirements.
  • Knowledge of ACNC, SCHADS Award, and not-for-profit regulatory environments.
  • Experience contributing to organisational strategy, business planning and organisational
    change initiatives.
