The role:

The Community Education Officer will be required to:

  • Liaise with community groups, schools, service organisations, government departments and business to assess needs and interests regarding planning and participation on a Tour to Places of Worship within the City of Greater Dandenong and beyond where appropriate.
  • Lead, co-ordinate bookings and deliver Tours to Places of Worship within the City of Greater Dandenong and beyond where appropriate.
  • Develop an annual calendar of tours along with a roster of tour guides for each tour/event.
  • Promote the tours program and generate publicity through local papers and social media platforms and website.
  • Train and support volunteer tour guides and hosts.

Major Responsibilities for the role:

  • Supervision and co-ordination of all Tours to Places of Worship.
  • Ensure information and position descriptions for volunteers are up to date – (e.g. tour guides and hosts, including religious and faith practices appropriate and respectful to each Place of Worship)
  • Liaise with the bus company to confirm transport, confirm room booking for post tour and order refreshments for public tours.
  • Deliver orientation and training for all volunteer tour guides and hosts as required.
  • Prepare information kits and handouts for tours where appropriate.
  • Maintain and regularly produce an up-to-date tour contact list for the IFN.
  • Provide a detailed and annual summary of tours conducted, (e.g. numbers, types, community, schools etc.)
  • Lead and facilitate the Schools Sub-committee including events such as the Schools Annual Gathering.
  • Ensure tour guides and tour participants are aware of and apply appropriate dress codes when visiting each place of worship.
  • Be available to act as tour guide when tour volunteers are not available.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Tertiary Degree in Social Science, Community Development, Education, Administration or significant years of experience in a similar field.
  • Experience and understanding in areas of faith, interfaith and multifaith settings preferable.
  • Organisational and management skills in an office environment.
  • Skills in volunteer engagement, training and supervision.
  • Technology skills including the use of online meeting applications and computer programs including Microsoft Office, WordPress and Social Media.
  • Current Police Check required.
  • Working with Children Check required.
  • Level 2 First Aid Certificate required.

Specialist skills and knowledge:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the interfaith/multifaith and community sector.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse religious, spiritual and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in event planning and management.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the OH&S Regulations relevant to the position.
  • Empathy with others as well as recognising and valuing diverse cultures through engagement with various faiths, identities, beliefs and languages.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals.
  • Ability to problem solve and minimise risk.
  • Ability to apply a high level of detail to both written and verbal requirements.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with IFN members, volunteers, participants and visitors.
  • Empathy and cultural awareness, including the ability to liaise with and build trust and rapport with and between diverse faith groups, leaders and volunteers in the community.

Terms and Conditions:

  • This position is subject to ongoing funding.
  • The position is to be permanent part time and maybe be terminated by either party, giving the other four (4) weeks’ notice.
  • The position is 16 hours per week – over two (2) days per week.
  • Participation and presence at before and after-hours events will be required.
  • A probation period of six (6) months applies to this position.
  • Driver’s license and car essential.
