The next chapter of Australia’s energy transition must ensure everyone can participate. Renters, apartment residents, businesses and regional communities should all have the right to access clean, affordable energy. As our homes, businesses and transport become increasingly electrified, we must ensure that electrification is powered by clean energy so people can reduce both their bills and carbon emissions.

Just as access to clean water became an essential public expectation of the twentieth century, access to clean, affordable electricity is becoming one of the defining public policy challenges of the twenty-first.

Energy can be a source of economic security, social cohesion and political stability—or of rising costs, inequality and division. A stable, productive and unifying clean energy future will not happen by itself. It will require smart policy, bold campaigns and a powerful movement of everyday Australians working together to ensure the transition remains fair, democratic and consumer-led.

Solar Citizens is at the forefront of that movement.

Over the past four years, we have helped secure billions of dollars in public investment and policy reform to expand access to rooftop solar, batteries, electric vehicles and other consumer energy resources. Today, we represent more than 200,000 supporters and are entering an exciting new phase through our 2026–2029 Strategic Plan—expanding our national impact while helping partners around the world build their own consumer energy movements.

We are looking for an exceptional leader to become our National Campaigns Director.

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of Australia’s most respected clean energy campaigning teams, with an outstanding record of winning ambitious reforms, strong relationships across politics, industry and civil society, and a reputation for practical, solutions-focused advocacy.

You will help shape the future of Australia’s energy system—and, in doing so, help develop a model that other countries are increasingly looking to follow.

About the role

The National Campaigns Director is responsible for leading Solar Citizens' national campaigns and delivering the organisation's national aspects of our ambitious 2026 - 2029 Strategic Plan.

Reporting directly to the CEO and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, you'll lead a multidisciplinary team spanning communications, organising and campaigning while working closely with fundraising, operations and our growing international program.

You'll bring together political strategy, communications, grassroots organising and policy into campaigns that win.

This is both a strategic and hands-on leadership role.

What you'll do

Lead our national campaigns

• Lead delivery of Solar Citizens' national campaign strategy.
• Identify opportunities to influence governments and decision-makers.
• Ensure campaigns are politically strategic, evidence-based and supporter-led.
• Evaluate campaign effectiveness and continuously improve our impact.

Lead an exceptional team

You'll directly lead:

• Communications Director
• Senior Organiser
• Organiser
• Policy Lead (planned)

You'll coach and develop staff, build leadership capability and create a collaborative, high-performing culture where people thrive.

Drive political impact

• Develop advocacy strategies that influence governments.
• Build relationships across federal and state politics.
• Represent Solar Citizens in high-level meetings.
• Support the CEO with major political opportunities.
• Work closely with partners and coalitions.

Integrate campaigns and communications

You'll ensure communications, media, digital campaigning and community organising all reinforce one another to maximise campaign impact.

Build powerful movements

You'll work with partners across the climate, consumer, housing and social justice sectors to build broad support for cleaner, cheaper energy.

About you

You are an experienced campaign leader who combines strategic thinking with excellent execution.

You know how to bring people together around ambitious goals and turn ideas into campaigns that influence governments.

You're equally comfortable mentoring staff, briefing journalists, planning political strategy and making decisions under pressure.

You believe great campaigns are built through collaboration, strong relationships and empowering others to lead.

Essential experience

• Significant experience leading successful advocacy or political campaigns.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong understanding of Australian politics and policy.
• Excellent strategic planning and project management skills.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication.
• Experience developing campaign strategy that delivers measurable outcomes.
• Strong leadership and people management skills.
• Ability to build productive relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Highly desirable

• Experience in climate, energy, environmental or consumer advocacy.
• Community organising experience.
• Communications or media leadership experience.
• Policy development experience.
• Experience working in a fast-paced campaigning NGO.
• Experience managing organisational change and growth.
