About the ACT Reconciliation Council

The ACT Reconciliation Council is an advisory body that supports and advises the ACT Government on advancing reconciliation across the ACT and surrounding regions.

The Council provides leadership on reconciliation through community engagement, advocacy and education, promoting understanding of the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Council supports respectful and meaningful conversations and works to strengthen relationships across the ACT community.

Council members engage with the community to promote reconciliation throughout the year and support activities leading up to and including the ACT Reconciliation Day public holiday. Members also contribute to community engagement within their networks in ways that align with the Council’s ethos and Ways of Working.

The Council is made up of two Co-Chairs and up to 12 members. Members are appointed by the Minister of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs for a two year term. The Council meets approximately every 6 to 8 weeks, with additional meetings and participation in Reconciliation Day event activities as required.

Position title - Member, ACT Reconciliation Council

Members of the ACT Reconciliation Council contribute community‑grounded, informed advice to support the advancement of reconciliation in the ACT. Members participate actively in Council meetings and activities and support the Council’s leadership, engagement and advocacy functions.

Key responsibilities

  • Promote awareness and understanding of reconciliation within the ACT community.
  • Maintain connections with community members and stakeholders and bring community perspectives to Council discussions.
  • Provide informed advice on reconciliation priorities, opportunities and emerging issues.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of the annual ACT Reconciliation Day public holiday and associated activities.
  • Participate constructively in Council meetings, projects and working groups.
  • Engage respectfully and work in culturally safe ways in line with the Council’s Ways of Working.
  • Identify and support reconciliation champions and opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
  • Act in accordance with governance, confidentiality and conflict of interest requirements.

Position title - Co-Chair, ACT Reconciliation Council

Co‑Chairs are responsible for leading the effective operation of the ACT Reconciliation Council and acting as primary public representatives of the Council. Co‑Chairs provide leadership to members, guide the Council’s work program, and maintain relationships with the Minister and key stakeholders.

At least one Co‑Chair must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

Key responsibilities

In addition to member responsibilities, Co‑Chairs are expected to:

  • Act as public spokespersons for the Council and attend key events that promote reconciliation in the ACT.
  • Lead the development and delivery of the Council’s work plan.
  • Chair Council meetings and ensure culturally safe, respectful and constructive discussions.
  • Facilitate consensus‑based decision‑making and manage disagreements constructively.
  • Liaise with the Secretariat to set agendas, allocate actions and progress Council business.
  • Delegate and oversee out‑of‑session work and specific projects as required.
  • Keep the Minister informed about the Council’s priorities, advice and activities.

Remuneration

The ACT Reconciliation Council members are entitled to remuneration as determined by the ACT Remuneration Tribunal for Part-time Public Office Holders. This includes sitting fees for meeting, in line with the current determination as of 14 April 2026.

ACT Public Servants are not eligible for remuneration when serving as Council members, consistent with ACT Government governance arrangements.

  • Availability and capacity to meet Council participation and governance requirements

Note: This is not an ACT Public Service employment position. Members are appointed as part time office holders. Appointments are for a fixed two- years term from November 2026.
