Key Purpose of the Role

Engadine Uniting Church is seeking to build a more public expression of our core values and priorities and to participate in ministry that is relevant to the community in areas such as managing anxiety, action on climate change and social justice issues.

The church seeks a highly motivated person with experience in communications (including social media), organising volunteers, event management and administration in a faith-based or social justice organisation.

The congregation needs support and guidance as they expand their activities into the community engaging people in ways that look different from the traditional form of church.

The successful applicant will be committed to achieving the church’s vision as outlined in the strategic plan.

Relationships

The Engagement Coordinator will:

  • Report to: Church Council
  • Work closely with: Supply Minister (part-time) and Church Council Chair
  • Collaborate with: Church Council, the Supply Minister, and Volunteers
  • Support relationships with: relevant community organisations including Christian Students Uniting, Sydney Alliance, Common Grace, Amnesty (local chapter) and Project Youth (local service provider)

Responsibilities

The Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for supporting, encouraging and equipping the congregation to develop new communities and activities in which faith and spirituality can be expressed and explored in a variety of ways.

The Coordinator will work with and support the Church Council to:

  • Communicate the ethos and mission of the church both internally and externally; coordinate social media and other communications to build and maintain an awareness in both the local community and amongst key stakeholders of the positive contribution that Engadine Uniting Church makes and can make to the community;
  • Encourage and lead church members in the implementation of the new strategic plan, identifying relevant training and mentoring opportunities for members and supporting them in their leadership development;
  • Design events that meet community needs and build links between the church and community, directing and supporting members to deliver events and develop relationships
  • Track progress against the congregation’s strategic plan, using existing and new activities as the basis for growing membership of the congregation and a community associated with the congregation;
  • Carry out some administrative and operational tasks necessary to implement the strategic plan.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a community organising or volunteer management role, ideally including capacity building for volunteers to develop local events and actions;
  • Excellent understanding of media and communications, and the ability to effectively coordinate existing platforms: emails, website, banners, message board and social media.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build relationships and inspire people to take action;
  • An understanding of and ability to critically engage with the spiritual issues facing adults in the community, and able to reflect theologically to connect faith and modern life.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Experience working within a church environment
  • Knowledge and/or experience of ‘emerging church’ models
  • Maturity in personality and Christian faith with a clear set of values consistent with the Uniting Church as expressed in the Basis of Union;
  • A willingness to work within the ethos of the Uniting Church;

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Writing copy to support social media, organising and events;
  • Working with people of a range of ages and faith experiences;
  • Experience in a small, values based organisation

Application for the Position

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience and ability
  • Contract: Two years, with 6-month probation period. Start in early 2021.
  • Workload: This may be a 3 to 5 days per week position, depending on the preferred candidate.
  • Location: A combination of on-site and remote work.
