Treasurer (Voluntary)

Eating Disorders Families Australia
  • Highly regarded national organisation
  • Work alongside an experienced Board
  • Build your governance portfolio

Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) is the only national organisation providing support, education, advocacy and counselling solely to families and carers impacted by an eating disorder.

As a fast-growing national charity, EDFA works alongside governments, clinicians, researchers, and lived-experience advocates to ensure families and carers are recognised as essential partners in recovery. Guided by a highly experienced Board and Executive Leadership Team, EDFA is committed to strong governance, innovation, and sustainable growth.

We are seeking an experienced finance professional to join EDFA as our Volunteer Treasurer. This is an outstanding opportunity to apply your financial expertise to a meaningful cause while building your governance portfolio through a strategic Board-appointed leadership role.

EDFA is accredited to the National Safety and Quality Digital Mental Health Standards.

About the role

The Treasurer provides strategic financial leadership and governance oversight to help ensure EDFA remains financially sustainable, well governed, and positioned for continued growth. Working closely with the Board Chair, Finance, Risk and Audit Committee, Executive Director and Finance Manager, the Treasurer provides independent oversight of EDFA's financial management, risk management and audit processes.

This is a governance role rather than an operational position. The Treasurer does not undertake day-to-day financial management, which remains the responsibility of management, but provides strategic oversight, advice and assurance to the Board.

The successful applicant will contribute to EDFA's continued growth by helping ensure robust financial governance, effective risk management, and long-term organisational sustainability.

Duties:

  • Provide strategic financial advice and recommendations to the Board.
  • Review monthly financial reports and present a Treasurer's Report at Board meetings.
  • Support the Board's oversight of budgeting, cash flow, financial reserves, and long-term sustainability.
  • Participate as a key member of the Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee.
  • Provide oversight of financial risk management, audit, and compliance.
  • Support strategic decision-making by providing financial insight into growth opportunities and major organisational initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with the Board Chair, Executive Director, and Finance Manager to strengthen EDFA's financial governance.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

Essential:

  • CPA, CA or equivalent accounting qualification.
  • Senior executive financial leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of governance within the not-for-profit sector.
  • Experience interpreting financial statements, budgets, and financial reporting.
  • Understanding of audit processes, financial controls, and risk management.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive challenge while building positive working relationships.

Desirable:

  • Lived experience as a family member or carer of someone experiencing an eating disorder.
  • Previous experience as a Treasurer or Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee Chair.
  • Previous Board governance experience.
  • Experience within the health, mental health, or community sectors.
  • Understanding of grant-funded organisations and ACNC governance requirements.

Commitment

The Treasurer is a Board-appointed Officer of the Company and attends all Board meetings and Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee meetings, while contributing to EDFA's strategic direction and financial governance. This is a voluntary role offering a unique opportunity to apply your financial expertise to a nationally respected organisation making a meaningful difference to families and carers across Australia.

To provide continuity and support EDFA's long-term strategic growth, applicants should be able to make a minimum commitment of two years to the role.
