Queensland Mental Health Commission

Applications are now open for the role of Mental Health Commissioner, Queensland Mental Health Commission (Commission). Reporting to the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, the Commissioner performs the role of Chief Executive of the Queensland Mental Health Commission and is responsible for leading the Commission, consisting of approximately 26 permanent staff and 24 temporary staff.

To be successful, you will have:

  • held significant positions where you have led delivery of a vision responsive to government priorities, community needs and changing expectations
  • a demonstrated ability to make fair and balanced administrative decisions in the public interest with a comprehensive understanding of the broader mental health, suicide prevention and alcohol and other drugs systems and policies
  • deep experience practising sound corporate governance, political impartiality, and independence
  • developed high performing teams and have fostered exceptional relationships with a broad range of stakeholders
  • experience in providing advice to Ministerial and Senior Executive levels, and
  • experience in direct dealings with media, particularly with managing adverse matters.

As a statutory office holder, the Commissioner appointment is made by the Governor in Council for a term of not more than five years.

About the Queensland Mental Health Commission

The Commission is an independent statutory body established under the Queensland Mental Health Commission Act 2013 (the Act). The role of the Commission is to drive ongoing reform towards a more integrated, evidence-based, recovery-oriented mental health and alcohol and other drugs system in Queensland.

The Commission is committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders and is focused on increasing knowledge, understanding and information sharing through partnerships, public reports and community awareness activities. The Commission works closely with the community, government, and industry in areas including health, employment, education, housing and justice.

The Commission is supported by a Queensland Mental Health and Drug Advisory Council that provides advice and guidance on mental health and substance misuse issues and makes recommendations on how the Commission fulfils its functions.
