PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

This position is responsible for the management and leadership of the Bábbarra Women’s Centre and the textile brand, Babbarra Designs. It operates under the direction of the CEO in accordance with BAC plans, policies, relevant legislation and funding requirements.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage the delivery of Babbarra Designs textile production and other arts initiatives, manage the retail shop front and ensure ongoing participation in exhibitions, art fairs and other promotional events.
  • Work to ensure the interests of Women in the community are represented with a focus on creating and promoting initiatives for improved health and well-being including the operation of an Op Shop.
  • Develop education and development programs for women and girls living in Maningrida and surrounding Homelands. Ensure Homelands residents are represented in decision making and creative initiatives.
  • Mentor and train staff in all aspects of operating Babbarra Designs studio, retail shop and op shop including cataloguing artwork, cleaning the studio and cash handling. Direct supervisions include managing an assistant manager and four arts workers. Support the artistic and professional development of artists and staff through training and supervision.
  • Ensure photography of designs and the cataloguing of textiles are up to the highest possible standards. Update the artists stories and biographies as required. Ensure accurate SAM (Stories Art Money) records are maintained. Employ local language dictionaries as necessary for accuracy.
  • Ensure all art products generated are of high quality and materials and all artworks / stock are preserved, collected, presented and interpreted with great care, whether in storage and/or on public display locally, Australia-wide and/or internationally.
  • Execute arts marketing strategies with proficiency. Take charge of curating and managing Babbarra Designs dynamic social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Administer the WordPress website and CornerShop widget, ensuring regular updates and maintenance of website content.
  • Use your knowledge of screen printing and textile design to support workshops and the development of new designs. This may also include exposing screens, maintaining equipment and reviving archived designs.
  • Apply curatorial and creative presentation skills to ensure art and craft are exhibited to maximise commercial return, generate high levels of public interest and appeal and to best represent the artist[s] and their works.
  • Take all measures to protect the intellectual property and copyright licensing provisions of the artists in the use and exchange of materials, products, prints, visual documentation, photographs and digital images.
  • Ensure income targets are achieved through the generation of sales, careful management of budgets and the sourcing of grants to maximise ongoing sustainability.
  • Design and develop exhibition proposals to showcase artist profiles and artwork and identify opportunities to participate in local, Australian or International industry fairs and exhibitions.
  • Ensure that accurate documentation is collected and maintained to demonstrate compliance with acquittals and reporting of Government grants and contracts.
  • Manage equipment purchases and maintenance and undertake stock control, inventories and audits to report outcomes to CEO.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, lead and manage a team with knowledge, understanding and empathy for their cultural background and provide support to artists to undertake their creative artwork.
  • Provide a safe working environment that complies with OH&S regulations and industry standards under the NT Work Health Act.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain positive stakeholder relationships with all BAC staff, and develop sound working relationships through delivering appropriate and honest support and/or feedback.
  • Any other duties requested by your supervisor which are within your capabilities.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a remote aboriginal community environment, with knowledge and understanding of aboriginal protocol and culture.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a culturally inclusive workplace using the principles and practices of cultural competence and providing responsive management and leadership in the production of arts and crafts.
  • Experience working with and mentoring Indigenous artists with an ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity, provide advice and problem solve on a variety of complex issues including working environment needs and the supply of artistic materials.
  • An understanding of the issues faced by Women in Indigenous communities, knowledge of community development principles and and the ability to facilitate local leadership meetings.
  • Strong experience in continuous quality improvement, data collection systems to allow for auditing, stocktaking, collecting, presenting, reporting and interpreting art/craft when in storage and/or public display in different locations and venues.
  • Extensive interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholder management and service providers to maximise participation in local, intrastate, interstate and international exhibitions.
  • Sound financial and budget management and procurement practices with knowledge of grant acquittals and reporting for Northern Territory and Australian Government funding and policy guidelines.
  • Experience using the Stories Art Money (SAM) database to catalogue artwork and pay artists.
  • Excellent project management skills including successful strategic business planning, staff management calendar planning.
  • Experience in developing and implementing artistic programs to ensure a variety of traditional materials are collected and maintained to generate new types of art and textile products
  • Proven track record with the application of Intellectual Property and Copyright legislative requirements relating to art and craft to maximise commercial outcomes for BAC and the artists.
  • A strong record of achievement in leading and managing teams and implementing training and development workplace practices.

Desirable:

  • Experience working for a community development or not-for-profit organisation.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Fine Arts, Business, Community Development [or progress towards this] and/or significant work experience in this field.
  • Experience with design software such as Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and web design (wordpress)
  • Demonstrated studio practice in screen printing or textile design will be strongly regarded.

Remuneration

Bawinanga is offering an attractive remuneration package to the right person.

  • Base salary: $85,797.92 per annum
  • Plus 12% superannuation
  • 6 weeks Annual Leave
  • 17.5% Annual Leave loading
  • 10 days Personal Leave
  • Rent free accommodation provided.
  • Relocation costs provided.
