Situated within the Faculty of Health, School of Medicine, this position will support the Mental Health Australia General Clinical Trial Network (MAGNET); a national initiative funded by the Medical Research Future Fund.

This role will work with First Nation’s partner organisations of MAGNET and First Nation’s peoples and will specifically provide input related to First Nations Wellbeing and Governance to MAGNET’s committees and Platform resources.

In addition to providing First Nations input into the six major platforms, Assessments, Data management, Health Economics, Governance and Policy, Lived experience and First Nations, this position will support the 4 MAGNET signature trials, as well as construct and oversee the First Nations Wellbeing and Governance Platform.

The successful candidate will have experience of supporting or representing clinical research in mental health and wellbeing in First Nations Communities.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Applying a First Nations knowledges lens to inform and advise MAGNET resources, projects, policies and procedures.
  • Managing MAGNET’s First Nations Governance and Wellbeing platform, including the writing and development of guidelines related to engaging with First Nations peoples relevant to the work of MAGNET, and ensuring MAGNET materials are also appropriately tailored and worded.
  • Managing the network’s operations, including communication with stakeholders and relevant communities which include First Nation’s communities, and other researchers and organisations delivering mental health support services to First Nation’s people.
  • Undertaking a range of tasks to maintain the online platform which includes updating the websites, source content to ensure resources are up to date and available to the community.
  • Organising and attending relevant meetings, and participating in the planning and review of the Platforms, signature trials and related activities.
  • Developing and/or maintaining familiarity with the principles of good clinical practice and a commitment to operate within these guidelines.
  • Working collaboratively with MAGNET leadership and research investigators to develop and maintain strong strategic and research partnerships with key stakeholders, with a national reach, connected to MAGNET.
  • Any other duties which will facilitate mental health trials and First Nation engagement.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Previous experience and knowledge of working with First Nations communities especially in a research capacity.
  • Worked with lived/living experience individuals/groups.
  • Understanding or experience in any one or more of - research in mental health or experience in consulting on ethics matters relating to First Nation’s research, or experience serving on an ethics committee to consider research into First Nation’s health issues or have experience in preparing ethics application.
  • Connected with the First Nations communities.
  • A combination of relevant experience and/or education/training (which could include one or more of the following - research experience in a community or tertiary organisation or governance and/or legal experience in relation to health research with First Nations and lived experience and research administration or serving on ethics committee or writing ethics applications for research projects, project co-ordination and communications)
    OR
    Completion of a graduate degree in a related field with subsequent relevant work experience as described above.
  • Expertise in a range of methodologies, which include (but are not restricted to) project management, clinical trial methods, ethics.
  • The ability to research, interpret, and apply up-to-date information.
  • Demonstrate the ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, diplomacy, tact and discretion as well as proven experience handling sensitive and personal information in a confidential and appropriate manner.

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of clinical trials.
  • Demonstrated experience working in health.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in an environment where there is a high-volume activity.
