About Us

Council on the Ageing (COTA Victoria) is Victoria's leading not-for-profit organisation representing the interests and rights of people aged over 50. Seniors Rights Victoria provides information, advice, advocacy and support to older Victorians experiencing elder abuse, as well as their families and support networks. We work from a human rights and empowerment framework to help older people make informed decisions and remain safe. 

About the Role

As a Graduate Advocate, you will work closely with experienced advocates and legal professionals to support older Victorians experiencing elder abuse. You will assist clients through information, referrals, advocacy and ongoing support while contributing to the operation of the SRV Helpline. 

Key responsibilities include:

• Supporting older people to identify options and achieve their desired outcomes. 
• Conducting risk assessments and safety planning. 
• Providing information, support and warm referrals to community services. 
• Responding to calls on the Seniors Rights Victoria Helpline. 
• Recording client information and maintaining case notes. 
• Assisting with resource development, community education and awareness activities. 
• Participating in case discussions, supervision and ongoing professional development.

About You

We are looking for someone who is motivated to begin a career in advocacy and is passionate about protecting the rights of older people.

You will bring:

• A tertiary qualification in Social Work or a related discipline.
• An interest in ageing, elder abuse prevention, family violence, advocacy or community services.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage sensitively with older people.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Sound computer literacy and confidence using case management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• A commitment to human rights, inclusion and client-centred practice.

Employment Requirements

Applicants must:

• Hold a current Victorian Driver's Licence. 
• Successfully complete a National Police Check. 
• Be willing to undertake occasional travel and out-of-hours work as required.
