About the role

The Litter Prevention Coordinator plays a key role in supporting Clean Up Australia's mission and is responsible for coordinating and implementing Clean Up Australia’s Litter Prevention plan and roadmap. This position focuses on behaviour change, stakeholder engagement, education, and community-led action to reduce litter at the source and encourage sustainable waste practices.

Clean Up Australia is looking for a friendly and energetic individual to join our tight-knit team in Sydney. The role will report to the Community Relationships Manager and be supported by the whole organisation. This role is a chance to drive real change in communities around Australia.

Our ideal candidate

  • Will activate the Clean Up Australia litter prevention strategic plan and roadmap, to be highly effective in achieving our goals, and be able to work with tight budgets and a small team.
  • Will have experience working with litter prevention and/or waste education and awareness programs, and community activities.
  • Will be comfortable working autonomously, in a team environment, and performing effectively under deadlines.

Responsibilities include:

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement Clean Up Australia’s Litter Prevention Plan and Roadmap.
  • Work with the already established relationships with local councils, government bodies, community groups, schools, and businesses to encourage and support litter prevention initiatives and divert waste from landfill.
  • Embed litter prevention messaging in the charity’s national events, including Clean Up Australia Day and the Great Spring Clean Up.
  • Foster relations with key environmental organisations within the waste and sustainability industry to drive action on litter prevention.
  • Develop and analyse information and data streams to track progress, evaluate program effectiveness, and encourage community engagement with litter prevention initiatives.
  • Contribute to submissions and provide support to Clean Up Australia’s Project and Advocacy Specialist.
  • Assist in the creation of litter prevention resources, including toolkits, fact sheets, and digital resources to support communities and partners with local litter prevention efforts.
  • Contribute to co-branded litter prevention projects with the Corporate Partnerships team.
  • Assist with grant applications and funding reporting.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Formal qualifications or equivalent experience in environmental science, sustainability, community engagement, or a related field.
  • Demonstrable experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience in litter prevention and/or waste management activities.

Key skills

  • Passion for environmental sustainability and community-driven change.
  • Experience in program coordination, community engagement, or environmental education.
  • An ability to think innovatively and plan strategically, to make the greatest impact with a small budget, by identifying opportunities and making informed decisions based on data.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively for a target audience.
  • Effective communication and people skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels with a diverse range of stakeholders, internally and externally.
  • Understanding of waste management systems, recycling landscape, and litter prevention strategies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently.

Additional information

  • This role is four days per week, 0.8 FTE (Full Time Equivalent), fixed-term contract until 30 April 2028, with potential for extension.
  • This is a 0.8 FTE role, with a pro rata salary of $85,000 - $90,000 + Super (12%).
  • The role is a hybrid working opportunity with a minimum of 3 days per week in Clean Up Australia’s head office in Sydney, CBD.
  • This role will sometimes involve work outside of normal business hours to meet objectives, with time-in-lieu.
