CDAH works toward its vision by providing information, mentoring, peer support, training and development to increase the knowledge, skills and capacity of people with disability and their families, by providing a collective voice and by building the capacity of the community to welcome all people. CDAH believes that people who have shared experiences can offer invaluable support to others who are about to embark on a similar journey.

CDAH’s work is driven by its Board which is made up of people with disability and family members.

About the role:

The Peer Mentoring Coordinator is responsible for developing and overseeing peer mentoring at CDAH – which is designed to increase the knowledge, skills, confidence and capacity of people with disability and their family members to live the life they choose.

The Peer Mentoring Coordinator will be the first point of contact for mentors and mentees and will strengthen CDAH’s capacity to deliver peer mentoring activities, events and campaigns that promote and strengthen peer work, and will collaborate with a range of partners to promote the work of CDAH and peer work more broadly.

Lead responsibilities

  • Promote CDAH and peer work in the Hunter region and among relevant networks
  • Develop effective strategies to ensure that trained peer mentors are matched with people seeking mentoring at CDAH
  • Actively participate in the ongoing development of peer mentor training
  • Engage and maintain effective communication with diverse stakeholders and partners
  • Work collaboratively with CDAH staff, volunteers and members to ensure peer work remains at our core and to support peer capacity building in our organisation
  • Build the capacity of CDAH peer mentors, staff, volunteers and members to contribute to the coordination and running of CDAH’s peer mentoring activities
  • Participate in the development of a communications strategy and support CDAH staff and members to implement this strategy
  • Contribute to regular reporting and evaluation processes as required
  • Contribute to activities such as CDAH staff meetings

Other Duties:

  • Any other duties in line with the philosophy and objectives of CDAH as directed by the Executive Officer.

Selection criteria

The Peer Mentoring Coordinator will have the following skills, experiences and/or qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the human rights of people with disability and the principles of participation and inclusion
  • Formal qualification and/or demonstrated extensive experience in community development, social sciences or another relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience working as a productive and respectful team member (experience working with a team in a capacity building role will be highly regarded)
  • Demonstrated skills in peer mentoring through lived experience of disability
  • Demonstrated skills in building relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Good project management skills, including time management, project planning and reporting
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in complex relationship management
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills, preferably with experience using a range of software or the ability to learn quickly

Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment is contingent on a satisfactory Working with Children Check and Police Record Check.
  • Six months probationary period applies.
