Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) is a peer support organisation, run for and by people with disability and their families.

At our core is peer support. We are forging new directions and are guided by our vision of an inclusive and just society where people with disability have genuine voice, choice and control. CDAH actively promotes and facilitates peer support to help people get the support they need to live the life they choose.

CDAH works toward its vision by providing information, mentoring, peer support, training, and development to increase the knowledge, skills, and capacity of people with disability and their families by providing a collective voice and building the community's capacity to welcome all people. CDAH believes that people who have shared experiences can offer invaluable support to others who are about to embark on a similar journey.

CDAH's work is driven by its Board which is made up of people with disability and family members.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Peer Mentoring Coordinator is responsible for developing and overseeing peer mentoring at CDAH – which is designed to increase the knowledge, skills, confidence and capacity of people with disability and their family members to live the life they choose.

The Peer Mentoring Coordinator will be the first point of contact for mentors and mentees. They will strengthen CDAH's capacity to deliver peer mentoring activities, events and campaigns that promote and strengthen peer work, and collaborate with a range of partners to promote CDAH and peer work more broadly.

LEAD RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and undertake strategies to ensure that trained peer mentors are matched with people seeking mentoring (mentees) at CDAH
  • In conjunction with the Peer Training Coordinator, participate in the ongoing development and training of peer mentors.
  • Encourage, design and support the effective integration of peer mentoring throughout CDAH's organisation
  • Review current mentor/mentee feedback forms and revise as necessary.
  • Ensure all communications, as required, are accessible.
  • Regularly contact and maintain communication with peer mentors and mentees
  • Provide regular supervision and support to mentors actively mentoring
  • Develop and maintain a record of mentor and mentee contact and progress
  • Effectively recruit and support prospective mentees
  • Engage and maintain effective communication with diverse stakeholders and partners
  • Work collaboratively with CDAH staff, volunteers and members to ensure peer work remains central to CDAH's peer support capacity building in our organisation
  • Participate in the development of a communications strategy
  • Contribute to regular reporting and evaluation processes as required
  • Attend CDAH staff and other meetings as required
  • Promote CDAH and peer work in the Hunter region and among relevant networks

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Any other duties in line with the philosophy and objectives of CDAH as directed by the Executive Officer.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The Peer Mentoring Coordinator will have the following skills, experiences and/or qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the human rights of people with disability and the principles of participation and inclusion
  • Formal qualification and/or demonstrated extensive experience in community development, social sciences or another relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience working as a productive and respectful project team member (experience working with a team in a capacity-building role will be highly regarded)
  • Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and online communication and facilitation skills, particularly with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated skills in peer mentoring through lived experience of disability
  • Good project management skills, including time management, project planning and reporting
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in complex relationship management
  • Demonstrated computer skills, preferably with experience using a range of software (Microsoft Teams, Word and Excel) or the ability to learn quickly

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Appointment is contingent on a satisfactory Working with Children Check and Police Record Check.
  • Six months probationary period applies.
