About the team/About the role:

The Cancer Information and Support Services (CISS) Division aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one needs to face cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer journey, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

The key purpose of the Counselling and Peer Support Specialist is to facilitate the delivery of the Counselling and Peer Support services, core psychosocial and emotional support services of Cancer Council NSW. Counselling and Peer Support services facilitate access to counselling and peer support for people affected by cancer; to reduce their levels of distress, increase their coping strategies and to help them feel less isolated.

Please note this is a Permanent 0.8 Part-Time position, working days Tuesday - Friday

Key responsibilities of the role:

• Provide evidence-based information on a range of cancer types to clients accessing 131120 information and support and are referred to Counselling and Peer Support services.
• Refer clients to relevant support services and facilitate client access to professional counselling and/or peer support in accordance with service operating guidelines.
• Provision of individual and group psychosocial / therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face engagement, across our peer support and counselling services.
• Contribute to review of peer support volunteer and facilitator performance and identify gaps in service, to ensure volunteer / facilitator competency in peer support provision and inform recruitment and continuity of volunteer / facilitator positions
• Contribute to the analysis of issues raised by counselling and peer support clients, and the peer support volunteers and facilitators, to inform evaluation and improve service delivery within the Counselling and Peer Support services and Cancer Council NSW.
• Provide service information and contribute to promotional activities, developing key health professional relationships to ensure service awareness and equity of access for people affected by cancer.

About you:

 Essential: 

• Counselling or Psychology tertiary qualification or equivalent.
• Registration with a national peak body eg PACFA, ACA, APHRA.
• Experience providing individual and group therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face.
• Knowledge of psychosocial support.
• Sound computer experience in Microsoft Programs including CRM.

Desirable:

• Previous experience in supportive care of cancer
  patients and their carers.
• Training / presentation skills and experience.
