  • Time commitment:  Approximately four full-day meetings, four days of reading time, regular email access and travel time per year
  • Term:  Immediate start - 31 December 2026 with the opportunity to renew term in January 2027

Community Broadcasting Foundation is seeking an Independent Board Director to join our Board.  We are looking for someone who brings expertise from outside the sector, offering diverse skills and perspectives to support our Board's governance and decision-making.

Every year, Community Broadcasting Foundation distributes $20+ million in funding to strengthen and support over 450 community broadcasting services across Australia to communicate, connect and share knowledge with their communities through radio, television and digital media.

About our Board

The Community Broadcasting Foundation Board provides direction for organisational objectives, policy and practice.  Our Board is made up of a diverse group of volunteers who contribute their valuable skills, time and expertise to support the sector and the work of our organisation.

Board members are volunteers recruited according to our Diversity, Access and Equity Policy

Board members serve a three-year term and may serve up to three consecutive terms (total of nine years).

Role & responsibilities

Independent Board Directors join our Board from diverse sectors of Australia and bring their experience from outside the community broadcasting sector to bear on the Board’s decisions.  The Board relies on their additional perspectives, diverse knowledge and expertise to support its governance and strategic decision-making.

Our Board members are responsible for:

  • Setting strategic objectives and monitoring progress and performance
  • Establish and review Board, committee and organisational governance policies 
  • Risk management and monitoring financial performance
  • Establishing and determining the powers and functions of our committees
  • Appointing and assessing the performance of our CEO, including remuneration and succession planning
  • Engaging with stakeholders - employees, industry, government, other groups

Qualifications and Experience

Our Board comprises seven to nine volunteer directors with expertise across:

    • Leadership and governance
    • Legal, risk management, finance and economics
    • Strategy, development & implementation
    • Social inclusion, technology and grant-making

    Community Broadcasting Foundation is committed to recruiting Board members who reflect the diversity of the community and have the optimum combination of experience, skills and attributes.

    Training and Support

    You will receive an induction and training by the Executive Officer prior to your first meeting, along with a Board member Induction kit. 

    As a Community Broadcasting Foundation Board member you will also be registered for online Indigenous and CALD (Cultural and Linguistically Diverse) cultural competency training (unless exempted due to your cultural background, prior experience or learning).

    During your term, you will be supported by our CEO, Executive Officer and President.  Our team will be able to help identify relevant professional development opportunities, address any concerns and provide opportunities for feedback between yourself and the organisation.
