Climate action is attracting unprecedented attention in Australia, regionally and internationally and both voluntary corporate and public policy compliance markets are evolving in pursuit of net-zero and negative emission economies.

The successful candidate will possess superb strategic development, project management and organisational skills with the ability to show initiative and work comfortably under pressure in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will also have a minimum of five years’ experience in media/communications management or similar strategy-focused roles, and an understanding of climate/carbon market communication issues.

You will demonstrate a wide degree of creativity and latitude with a keen interest in shaping an organisation’s image and values through appropriate communication and engagement with the outside world. Top candidates will display natural leadership qualities; including fantastic time management, planning and problem-solving skills.

This is a full-time position, but a four-day position may be considered for the right candidate. CMI’s office is based in Melbourne but candidates based elsewhere within Australia will be considered. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in media and communications management or similar strategy-focused roles. The position reports to the CEO, has line responsibility managing a part time Communications Manager and will work closely with CMI Executive and team members, especially the CMI Events Coordinator.

Specifically, the successful candidate will work on:

  1. Leading the implementation, review, update and reporting on CMI’s Communication Strategy ensuring key messages align with and help deliver CMI’s vision, mission and objectives.
  2. Writing, editing and assisting in the production of materials including media releases, opinion pieces, reports, briefings, factsheet and presentations
  3. Facilitate press conferences and briefings.
  4. Scan the media marketplace to keep up-to-date on the latest media trends and identify press opportunities through evolving issues.
  5. Management of media contact lists and building and developing direct media relationships.
  6. Providing counsel to the Executive Team and Board to ensure risk mitigation, and consistency of response and messaging for external communications.
  7. Work alongside the Manager, Policy & Advocacy to coordinate, monitor and communicate on proposed regulatory and industry changes as well as other climate issues.
  8. Strategic oversight of CMI’s digital communications assets, including website, Marketplace, Members Portal and other digital platforms.
  9. Coordinate the designing of media and social media strategies.
  10. Strategic oversight and development of key event and media/communications collateral (including for digital, print and video channels).
  11. Work with Executive Team on advocacy, engagement and relationship building strategies, including interactions with decisionmakers and stakeholders.
  12. Participate in and promote a learning, team-based culture.
  13. Other general duties as required.
