Boorndawan Willam is a phrase from Wathaurong and Woiwurrung languages meaning "safe house," with Boorndawan meaning 'safe' and Willam meaning 'house'.

Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) is the lead Aboriginal‑specific family violence service for the eastern metropolitan region of Melbourne. Established in 2006 and transitioning to an independent Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation in 2019, BWAHS delivers trauma‑informed, culturally grounded responses to individuals, families and Community experiencing, or at risk of, family violence.

We provide a wide range of services to Community and our engagement and support for our communities’ healing journey are vital – wholly underpinned and guided by culture.

About the role

This 12m fixed term role is critical at BWAHS as it is responsible both for ensuring employee pay and entitlements are timely and accurate and that essential client need is met.

The Payroll and Finance Officer manages all payroll queries as well as all accounts payable and receivable functions and oversees the Flexible Funding (client brokerage) reconciliation and acquittals.

This role ensures compliance with relevant legislation, industrial instruments, company policies and financial controls, while providing high-quality support to employees and suppliers.

Key responsibilities include

  • End to end payroll processing, ensuring compliance with Award conditions and all related legislation
  • Managing the full accounts payable cycle ensuring suppliers are paid on time
  • Raising invoices and managing accounts receivable
  • Completing all reconciliations (AP/AR & Payroll) and acquittals
  • Ensuring financial compliance and contributing to audits and reviews
  • Providing direction and support to Administration and Finance Officer and overseeing brokerage mechanisms
  • Identifying challenges and implementing process improvements and positive solutions

About you

You are a positive individual who understands the critical nature of this role in a small organisation.

You want to use your 2+ years’ experience with payroll and finance to make a difference in the Aboriginal Community by reducing financial stress wherever possible.

You are familiar with payroll in a not-for-profit context including salary packaging and portable long service leave.

You have a reputation for approachability, reliability and integrity and you communicate appropriately with everyone whether verbally or in writing.

Confidentiality – you get it! - with payroll obviously, but also with Community payments.

You may also have experience as a manager, knowledge of government funded program reporting requirements, experience with ELMO payroll and/or Xero Accounting, and a relevant qualification.
