Board Member (Voluntary)

Brunswick Neighbourhood House

Brunswick Neighbourhood House and Fawkner Neighbourhood House are looking for people who are curious, community-minded, and interested in helping shape the future of our neighbourhood houses.

Whether you're an experienced professional, an emerging leader, or simply someone who wants to learn more about governance and community leadership, we'd love to hear from you.

Why Get Involved?

Joining our Board or one of our Board Subcommittees is an opportunity to:

  • Make a real difference in your community
  • Learn how not-for-profit organisations operate
  • Develop leadership and governance skills
  • Build your professional network
  • Contribute your ideas, experience, and perspective
  • Help create opportunities for people to learn, connect, and belong

You don't need previous board experience. If you're willing to learn, ask questions, and contribute thoughtfully, we'll support you along the way.

Not Ready to Join the Board?

That's okay.

There are plenty of ways to get involved:

  • Join a Board Subcommittee and contribute your skills in a specific area such as finance, governance, fundraising, or strategy.
  • Provide administrative or project support to Board initiatives.
  • Explore governance in a supportive environment before deciding whether Board membership is right for you.

We welcome people who are curious and keen to learn, regardless of their previous governance experience.

What's Involved?

Our Board helps guide the strategic direction of both neighbourhood houses and ensures they remain strong, sustainable, and responsive to community needs.

Board members typically:

  • Attend ~ 12 online meetings each year (`2hrs @ month)
  • Read documents such as operational reports, financial reports and contribute to Board discussions (additional `5hours @ month required)
  • Attend at least 2 neighbourhood house events a year
  • Help shape future and priorities
  • Support good governance and decision-making

We'd Particularly Love to Hear from People with Experience In:

  • Finance and accounting
  • Human resources
  • Legal and risk management
  • Partnerships and fundraising
  • Strategy and organisational development

But don't let that list stop you. We also value lived experience, fresh perspectives, community connections, creativity, and a genuine interest in making a positive contribution.

Everyone Is Welcome

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board that reflects the communities we serve. We strongly encourage expressions of interest from people of all ages, cultures, genders, abilities, backgrounds, and lived experiences.

Interested?

Come and have a conversation with us, call into Brunswick or Fawkner the Neighbourhood House or attend a Board meeting, explore a subcommittee role, or find out more about becoming a Board Member. There is no obligation—just an opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute.

Together, we can create stronger, more connected communities.
