About the Campaign
The Gardens of Stone Alliance is a coalition of conservation organisations working to protect the internationally significant Gardens of Stone landscape from the impacts of coal mining and coal-fired power generation.
The Blue Mountains Conservation Society, on behalf of the Gardens of Stone Alliance, is seeking a part-time Campaigner (Digital and Public Engagement) to help deliver a strategic public advocacy campaign focused on protecting the water quality of the Upper Coxs River and the Blue Mountains National Park, part of Sydney's drinking water catchment.
The campaign aims to build public and political support for stronger environmental protections by securing a pre-election commitment to reinstate a robust and durable Neutral or Beneficial Effect (NorBE) water quality test before the 2027 NSW election. A key focus of the campaign is communicating the environmental impacts of coal mining in the Lithgow region, while building broad community understanding and support for long-term policy reform to protect the region's waterways and the internationally significant natural environment: the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
Purpose of the Role
The Campaigner will implement the Alliance's public engagement and digital communications strategy by translating scientific and technical information into clear, accessible messages that inspire community support and political action.
Working closely with Alliance members, scientific experts and volunteers, the Campaigner will coordinate communications, strengthen stakeholder relationships and deliver campaign activities that advance the Alliance's strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
- Deliver campaign activities aligned with the Alliance's strategic plan, particularly those supporting reinstatement of the strong and durable Neutral or Beneficial Effect (NorBE) water quality test.
- Develop engaging digital communications, including website content, newsletters, social media posts and campaign resources.
- Translate scientific, legal and policy information into clear, accurate and compelling communications for community and political audiences.
- Manage the Alliance's digital communication channels and online engagement tools.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with community organisations, supporters, partner organisations and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate community events, supporter engagement activities and campaign actions.
- Assist with media engagement by preparing communication materials and supporting media opportunities.
- Monitor campaign progress and prepare concise monthly reports for the Blue Mountains Conservation Society.
